I loved it there. I loved it seeing it again this past week at the Palladium. I am especially glad to see a festival film as a regular theatrical release. So often, you see a film at a festival and never see it again. It’s really spectacular to see Severance in distribution like this. I hope it finds it audience and does well at the box office. Severance is a horror comedy hailing from Britain, just as Shaun of the Dead is. However, Severance’s comedy is much darker than Shaun’s but just as much fun. Severance follows a group of co-workers on a team building exercise. The group is promised to be set up in a luxury resort in a secluded, wooded area. They find themselves in the secluded, wooded area but in a cabin where luxury is nowhere to be found. The group attempts to go on with things as planned, but circumstances force them to abandon those plans in order to survive. I really enjoyed the sick and twisted humor that Severance delivers. It presents situations so horrific, you have to laugh at them. I also really liked how the characters speculate on where they are. A few different people take turns telling stories about what they’ve heard that this place might be. Instead of just showing the people talking, the film shows the stories. It’s so much more fun and entertaining to see the story than to just see people talking. The characters are very distinct and well-developed and the story is amazingly believable, especially for a horror-film. So many horror films these days focus too much attention on gore and neglect character and story. Severance balances all these elements superbly. Severance is a bloody good time. Grade: A |
