comas.jpgYou would think that opening for a recently reunited Jesus & Mary Chain in New York would be the highlight to a lot of band’s summers, but the The Comas are planning on being out most of the summer to capitalize off of a batch of amazing reviews for their latest album, Spells.

The New York quartet blends art rock with hints of new wave and accessible modern rock to give the band a sound that could help them into shows with bands of many different genres. They formed in North Carolina in 1998, and have released four albums including the highly acclaimed 2004 CD Conductor.

Spells marks the first record with Vagrant Records and may keep much of the song structure from the earlier records. However, the band introduces somewhat heavier and epic sounding material on tracks like the opener “Red Microphone” and the standout “Come My Sunshine,” which has an Interpol-esque guitar sound, but with much more lively vocals (courtesy of Nicole Gehweiler).

The intriguing noise rock track “New Wolf” shows the diversity of the band in their sound and shows why Spells is receiving much love from national press outlets.

For many of the tracks, the term “art rock” doesn’t really apply to much of the material on Spells, but songs like “Sarah T.” might disapprove that notion. The band may play art rock at times, but the material is far more accessible than much of the music lumped into that label.

Now that they are done opening for Jesus and Mary Chain, The Comas will be on the road this summer. Their tour with Broken West started May 25, with the Veils hopping on the tour June 14th. Now its time to see what fans and many bands have been touting for a while as the Comas hit your town.

The Comas will be playing with the Veils at the Shelter on June 16th. Tickets are still available.
