fow.jpgFour years between albums can seem like an eternity but for long time rock group Fountains of Wayne, it gave the band time to craft another strong record without jumping and rushing an album. The situation started in 2003 when the band had it’s first major taste of mainstream success, with the hit “Stacy’s Mom.” Yeah, you heard it everywhere that summer; video stations, Top 40 radio, and even cola commercials.
But instead of trying to duplicate the success within a year, singer Adam Schlesinger and company took a step back and wrote their latest record, the recently released Traffic and Weather. On the new record, Fountains keeps their signature classic pop-rock sound full intact as the group gives the listener 14 new tracks.

Tracks like “’92 Subaru” will echo complimentary comparisons to classic alternative groups like the Replacements, and the title track from the record seems to lean towards a late 60s pop sound. Perhaps the best example of the band’s sound is the latter album track “The Hotel Majestic,” where the group exploring their rich rock sound. Perhaps the catchiest track on the record (and probably the ready made single song of the record) is “New Routine,” which you may want to watch out for.

Traffic and Weather features guest spots from a couple of Smashing Pumpkins veterans, with former guitarist James Iha playing on “Seatbacks and Traytables” and former bassist Melissa Auf Der Maur (the redhead, not the goth blonde) signing backup vocals on “Someone to Love.”

If Adam Scheslinger’s voice or music sounds familiar, you are not mistaken. He has done the music for the 1996 movie “That Thing You Do” and developed the theme for the Howard Stern Show, when the show was on the E! Entertainment Network.

The band is currently out on tour, and will be rolling through Detroit before heading out for the Bonnaroo Festival in Tennessee later this month. Make sure you check them out. And if you have a friend named Stacy, who also has a hot mom, well...

Fountains Of Wayne will be playing St. Andrew’s Hall on Monday, June 11th. Tickets are still available.
