Before they took the stage at the
Honda Civic Tour, I interviewed the dance rock outfit Cobra Starship. I
had a chance to talk with bassist Alex Suarez and guitarist Ryland Blackington
about their introduction to the band, their favorite video to shoot and the
band’s new keytarist. Here is the interview.
DetroitBuzz: You guys have toured a bit with Fall Out Boy in the past year, how did you guys end up hooking up with the band? Cobra Starship: Well, we came into the fold 8-9 months ago, when we were about to go on tour with them for some radio shows late last year. The band was already signed to Pete Wentz’s label (Fueled by Ramen), and it is a great way for exposure. DB: You guys also toured with Cartel earlier this year? How was that experience? CS: It was very good. We’ve got to tour with a lot of different bands on that tour and others. We got to do shows with Head Automatica and some with Panic! At the Disco. We’ve been fortunate to tour with the people that we’ve have so far. DB: What sort of influences shapes the band’s sound? CS: When Gabe (Sporta, mastermind of Cobra Starship) was putting this together originally, he played to his interests. Those were dance and electronic music from the late 80s and early 90s and freestyle music. DB: The video for “Send My Love” has a major 80s influence to it. Any references or items from the 80s that you guys forgot for that shoot? CS: We covered a lot in that video and I think got everything we wanted in the video in there. It was fun to get all the extras to wear spandex and things like that. Everyone looked funny. That was probably our most fun in shooting a video so far. DB: How is the new keytarist (Victoria Asher) working out? CS: Very good. She’s got a really good sense of humor and fits in well with the band. (Laughs) Believe me, you don’t have enough ink in your pen to discuss the issues with the old keyguitarist. DB: You guys have done a few soundtracks, any more on the horizon? CS: Not at this time. The band did the Snakes (on a Plane) sound prior to us coming into the band; but we just did one for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie that just came out. But we’ll take them as they come. AM: When is the band planning on getting off the road?CS: We’re off this tour on July 2nd. We’ll be doing a tour of Australia and Japan in August and doing the Reading and Leeds festival in late August. But we’re already working on the record while we’re on tour. For the second album, we are a major part of the writing process for this upcoming record.
