almost.jpgAs the guys in Underoath take a little time off before heading back to their next record; it doesn’t mean that everyone is just laying around and relaxing. Drummer Aaron Gillespie pulls a Dave Grohl and moves from out of the drum kit and takes the lead with his new project, The Almost.

The Almost is a departure from Underoath, incorporating more melody into the songs versus the screamo fury that Gillespie’s main band may display from time to time. The Clearwater, Florida based quintet recently put out their debut record Southern Weather, and mixes a familiar emo sound, with a little more straight ahead rock approach.

On Southern Weather, the album is lead by the opening single “Say This Sooner.” With its pounding beat and swagger, the single is highly catchy and has risen into the Top 30 of the Billboard Modern Rock Charts. The band swerves away from the screaming and moves a more tailored and tighter sound on songs like the title track, and the almost Brit-pop leaning “Everyone Here Smells Like a Rat.”

Even if Gillespie is trying to downplay the similarities to Grohl’s Foo Fighters; the comparsions are well deserved. But for Gillespie’s sake, being compared to the Foo Fighters is better than being compared to something like Tommy Lee’s Methods of Mayhem project a few years back.

Released on April 3rd, Southern Weather was embraced by many of the Underoath fans, as well as new fans. The album debuted in the Billboard Top 40 Albums, and is continuing to sell well. The band recently started a tour back on April 20th, with Paramore, and will be heading to Detroit on May 9th. But before the Detroit show; the band recently played at the Bamboozle Festival in New Jersey this past weekend. This summer, the band will be apart of the Warped Tour for the entire tour.

Even though Paramore will be headlining this show; I have this feeling that many of the people will be in attendance to see what The Almost will be bringing throughout the summer.
