As spring looms, and winter
finally looks to be outta Michigan for the year, we can looking forward
to summer. As the concert venues start to get their fill of acts coming in
during the warm months. But summer also brings major festivals of varying kinds
of the fields and cities of America.
This year, we’ll be giving you a Survival Guide to help you maneuver through any of this summer’s big music festivals. This year brings a lot of old favorites, and a few new ones to pick from this summer. So, the braintrust at Detroit Buzz is giving you this look at the 2007 summer festivals, make sure you choose wisely:
Coachella Festival - Indio, CA (April 27th through 29th) Year number eight at Coachella is as strong as ever as Coachella pulled off a major coup by scoring the first show in 7 years by Rage Against The Machine. That’s worth the 85 dollars for the day alone, just to see them. But you know you want to see other bands at Coachella, so the nights in the California desert shape up like this: Friday, April 27th: The always enigmatic Bjork headlines the first night, with Interpol and the Arctic Monkeys try to blast through the hype machine that’s in full overdrive for their next release. Saturday, April 28th: The Red Hot Chili Peppers headline, and may want to consider playing older material, versus the newer material that dominates the band’s set list. The diverse Arcade Fire supports them and Kings of Leon starts their tour that night at Coachella. Sunday, April 29th: Lily Allen is there; but we all know why people will stay for the final night. Rage, Rage, Rage. Does anything else matter? Tickets: $249 for the 3 day pass, $85 dollars per day (Saturday and Sunday one day tickets are sold out). Tickets are available through Ticketmaster.
Bamboozle Music Festival - East Rutherford, NJ- May 5th & 6th The East Coast strikes back with a major music festival, as the third annual Bamboozle festival heads to the Meadowlands for a two day run. Instead of watching Eli Manning choke on the field, you will see more successful people gracing the stage that weekend. The first day of two 12-hour shows will be headlined by home state heroes My Chemical Romance. But be careful, the band might want to forgo the face paint used in their “Black Parade” set, due to the probable heat there. Also on the first day will be the second coming of GWAR, as Finnish band Lordi shows up, as well as more emo/punk groups New Found Glory and Bayside. Day Two will bring the first show from Linkin Park in promotion for their sonically shifting album Minutes to Midnight. Other artists in day two will range from Killswitch Engage to Anberlin to Brand New. Make sure to have a major emo and metal fix in for this jam-packed festival. Tickets: Two day passes are sold out. One day passes are available for both days for $35 a day, and are available through Ticketmaster.
Rock On The Range - Columbus Crew Stadium- Saturday, May 19th Even though most Michiganders will take a lot of heat for traveling to the heart of Ohio State territory, it will be worth it. Crew Stadium, home to the Major League Soccer team Columbus Crew, hosts its first big festival. The one day festival will feature the return of ZZ Top to these parts and will feature 12 bands altogether. Look out for Velvet Revolver as they begin to support their latest album, and rock radio favorites Three Days Grace, Buckcherry and Breaking Benjamin will all hit the stage that day. And remember Puddle of Mudd? They’ll be back for their first show in a while in the Midwest. Make sure to bring your best stimulant to keep the ol’ stamina going for a wall-to-wall 12-hour day of hard rock. Oh yeah, and don’t wear your University of Michigan shirts. Tickets: $49.50, which are available through Ticketmaster.
Sasquatch Music Festival - George, WA- May 26th & 27th After last year’s chilly but action packed festival, the Gorge Amphitheatre, two hours from Seattle, is ready for the sixth edition of the festival named after the legendary mythical creature. This year’s two night lineup will feature Bjork on the first evening, but will also have Sri Lankan rapper M.I.A. and indie favorites The Hold Steady. Wild comedian Sarah Silverman will host both evenings, and probably making some very off-color but humorous comments. The second night will see the Beastie Boys playing their first gig of the year, and will be the start of the promotion of their new record. The legendary punk group Bad Brains may be another good one to touch on that second evening. Make sure to bring your rain gear, tent and afterbite to this festival for sure. Tickets: Tickets range from $55-75 for the weekend, depending on how quickly a ticket is bought. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster.
Bonnaroo Festival - Manchester, TN- June 14th through 17th After Radiohead and Tom Petty last year; Bonnaroo pulled off a major coup this year, when they got the Police to headline the festival. It will be one of the first dates on the group’s first tour since the mid-80s. The other headliners aren’t too bad either, with Tool headlining Friday night, and the re-emerging White Stripes finishing off the festival. Bonnaroo mainstays like Ben Harper will grace the stage, as well as diverse first timers as Franz Ferdinand to even Clutch. Once again, a comedy stage will also a part of Bonnaroo, with blood pressure raising comedian Lewis Black and Dave Attell leading the ceremonies there. And for the diehard hippie fans that think Bonnaroo has become too mainstream; don’t worry, you’ll get your fix too. The String Cheese Incident and Bob Weir and Ratdog are two of numerous jam rock bands heading to Tennessee that weekend. Make sure you try and avoid the old timers telling you old tour stories about the Police, but make sure to bring good vibes and enjoy the nice, warm weather in the countryside in June. Tickets: Festival tickets start at $184.50, and can be bought at www.bonnarootickets.com. There are no one day tickets available at this time.
Lollapalooza 2007- Chicago- August 3rd-5th After last year’s highly memorable hometown show from Kanye West, and virtually every band covering Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy”, Perry Farrell has brought the show back to Grant Park in Chicago for the third straight year. Pearl Jam was the first group locked in for the festival, and will be headlining the final night. Though it is not confirmed, it is rumored that Modest Mouse and Iggy & The Stooges will headline Friday and Saturday night, respectively. Other bands confirmed for Lollapalooza are Muse, My Morning Jacket and Interpol. Farrell’s new group Satellite Party will make their Lollapalooza debut, and the always enigmatic French techno outfit Daft Punk will head to Chicago that weekend as well. Great performances of the past will echo through Grant Park, and it will be interesting to see who breaks out of the festival with the best performance. Bring your credit card to pay for that expensive hotel room in downtown Chicago, and your Pistons jersey, and remind Ben Wallace when he played for a championship caliber team. Tickets: Tickets are $195, and can be bought at www.lollapalooza.com. One day ticket information not available yet.
Virgin Festival- Baltimore, MD- August 4th & 5th Not much is known about the particulars of this festival as of yet; other than it is competing with Lollapalooza. The major coup was stealing the Smashing Pumpkins, who will play Baltimore rather than a hometown reunion show at Lollapalooza. The Police and Beastie Boys are the other confirmed major players of the festival. Tickets: Announced very soon.
There are a lot of shows to drain your wallet this summer, but we hope that this list provides you a little bit better idea on which ones are going to be getting your dollar, and which one your friends will tell you all about. Make sure you bring water, beer, a clean change of clothes or two and even in some cases, your hackysack. So, let’s have a good time at these festival by one and all. See you this summer.
