Battling the cold weather, and a case of somewhat lethargic fans, Long Island’s From Autumn to Ashes fought through for a 60-minute vision into the future of the band in their set at St. Andrew’s Hall. The band recently made a change at lead singer, with original screamer Benjamin Perri being replaced by lanky and more melodic singer Francis Mark. In the group’s hour set, the band seemed loose and ready to connect with the fans, with Mark jumping into the crowd at many times. The dual guitar assault of Brian Deneeve and Rob Laurtisen brought the hardcore sounds in a pummeling fashion. Mark brings a new dynamic to the band, where as past shows with Perri wanting to overpower the crowd with the vocals; Mark comes off as a similar type of vocalist, but decides to pull back into melody when the time calls for it. On older tracks such as “No Trivia” and “Kansas City 90210,” the band actually displayed a flare for radio-friendly tracks, which came off as some of the better songs of the evening. But the arrival of Mark brings potentially one of their most melodic albums to date. April 10th will bring the band’s new record on Vagrant Records Holding A Wolf By The Ears. The album starts out with the furious “Deth Kult Social Club,” which stays true to the band’s hardcore roots but Mark throws his own spin on the song. The band is trying out this song and a few others out on tour. The new vocalist brings more balance to the vocal core on tracks like “Delusions of Grandeur” and “Recounts and Recollections.” Deneeve and Laurtisen excel on the old school metal sounding tune “Sensory Deprivation Adventure.” Also, the upcoming track “Love It Or Left It” is featured on the video game ATV Offroad Fury 4. The band channels their more toned down side on “Daylight Slaving” and “Travel.” If you missed the show with the bible-thumping Haste the Day, From Autumn to Ashes will be back on the road this summer. But be sure that the new album will be the focal point of the songs heading your way this summer. From Autumn to Ashes’ “Holding A Wolf By The Ears” is out April 10th on Vagrant Records. |
