From the creative mind of Alejandro Castano, The Red Fetish is a one man show that prepares to challenge its listeners through a barrage of sounds that will leave the listener guessing which direction the next song is going in. Hailing from the always warm (and brief one time home of yours truly) of Sarasota, Florida, Castano’s The Red Fetish rose from the ashes of Saddeks, in which Castano splitered off to go on his own. The Red Fetish released “A Premature Eradication” in 2005, and are now back with the self-titled, nine song EP. But if you are expecting a consistent sound through the material, then guess again because each song provides a different twist and turn throughout . Castano lists the Red Fetish as “Experimental/Progressive/Classical”, and listening to the EP, it is heavy on the experimental side, and less heavy on the classical side of things. Drum machine snare beats move through the EP opener “We Are Alive”, and mixes some lite electronica sounds into the track as well. Castano makes good use of synth on tracks like “Dear Marta”, in which the majestic guitar sound gives the song an eerie but engagingly mysterious feel to it. Castano goes into an another 180 degree turn as he shows off his piano skills, on tunes such as the completely piano instrumental “Politics”, and “Minimalist Accident in a Factory by Chinatown”, where Castano pounds the keys like a man possessed. But where Castano seems to be most comfortable is the fusion of the electronic beats and dark and moody vocals. Songs like “To Night” and “Things Fall Apart” are highlights on the record, and envoke memories of bands like Joy Division and newer sendups like She Wants Revenge. The Red Fetish plans on releasing a full length record sometime in 2007, but the self-titled EP gives us a good indication on the diverse musical journey that Castano plans to take us on in the coming years. It’s hard to put a finger on any labels for The Red Fetish, but one thing you cant call the group is predictable. Fellow experimental giants Mars Volta are getting predictable; while The Red Fetish plans to continue to be ballsy, and keeping their fans guessing in suspense on which direction their sound is going in next.
