Senses Fail @ Clutch Cargo’s- December 1, 2006
“I want to get this place so loud that the frat party downstairs hears us” screamed Senses Fail lead singer Buddy Nielsen as they brought the noise to a near packed house of around 1,400 to the Pontiac concert stronghold. On a windy and snowy night, Senses Fail warmed up the venue by ripping through a 60 minute set, that sent the mostly teenage crowd into a moshing frenzy throughout the entire evening. The band fused their hardcore edged punk rock as the New Jersey band focused of lot of the material from their latest record, “Still Searching”. The band ripped through tracks such as the latest single, “Calling All Cars”. The new single proves once again that the band is evolving and showing off more hooks in their sound as time goes on. The material seemed to be heavy on the “Still Searching” material, with searing tracks like the equally catchy “Shark Attack”, and the title track from the record. Nielsen and the band recollected their times in Detroit, including their first appearance at the Shelter years ago with another New Jersey band, My Chemical Romance (never heard of them, right?….) and always praised the integrity of the band and the vigorous energy of the fans in the crowd. The band also showed a more diverse side in their sound with tracks like “The Priest and the Matador” towards the end of the set. But for old Senses Fail fans of cuts off their “Let It Enfold You” album also got their fix when the band played songs like “Choke On You” and the blazing “Bite to Break Skin”. The set ended with the crowd favorite “Buried A Lie”, in which the band was almost drowned out by the crowd singing along. You gotta know you’re doing something right when that effect is taking hold. Orange County up and comer Saosin opened up the song, and seemed well liked by the crowd as well. Their sound is more of a straight up emo sound, versus the more punk sound of Senses Fail. In their 35 minute set, the band was eager to dish out new material like “Voices”, and the kids ate it up. Even if it didn’t excite one reviewer in the house too much… The most maligned band on the bill was the metalcore band from the O.C. as well. Bleeding Through definitely added to the diversity of the bill. The band had some pretty intense moments in the pit with songs like the hammering “Love in Slow Motion”, and “Kill to Believe”, which wrapped up their set. The band has been rumored to be taking a lot of heat on the bill, but the Detroit crowd showed them plenty of love. Senses Fail and Saosin will be back as part of the Rockstar Taste of Chaos tour, set for March 31st at Cobo Arena. |
