If you're looking for something to do on a Wednesday evening, let me make a suggestion... The Rebirth is more than just a title it is a reflection of not only how host/MC Gerrard Allen (aka "G") has changed his life, but also of his optimistic vision of his committment to contribute to the resurrection of the City of Detroit. The Rebirth is a venue for live entertainment including, but not limited to, poets, spoken word artists, singing, comedy, live musicians and business networking. Everyone is welcome! The Rebirth is hosted by G every Wednesday night at 8:30pm until the last poet, singer, musician or comedian has had the opportunity to express themselves, generally around midnight. There is a first and second half which allows those that can't stay out as late during the middle of the week the opportunity to exit without the worry of disrupting the artist on stage. In addition, G gives the audience members and artists that wish to remain after the entertainment has concluded, the opportunitiy to mingle, network and provide feedback until 2am, while jazz, soul and r&b play softly in the background. There are different, new and upcoming artists featured weekly and the audience members are always encouraged to sign up on the list and showcase their hidden talents as well. The artists weeks don't feel complete until they can grace the stage with their newest poems and then sit and watch others share their talents. The venue is located in the City of Detroit at 19350 Livernois Ave between Outer Drive and 7 mile at The Hunter's Supper Club. The ambience in this place is warm and comfortable with table seating by candlelight, cozy lighting, a lit fireplace and a panoramic view of the courtyard. There is also a balcony which overlooks the stage area for those that require a little more intimacy while on a date while listening to poetry, singing, music, etc. There is also a cash bar and kitchen so that people can drink and eat while they enjoy the ambience and entertainment. It's a cultural entertainment bargain at less than $10 cover. Next up? An Aids Awareness day on December 20th. Felix Sirls is the guest poet, having published five works of poetry and an autobiography. However, Felix is also an AIDS survivor who has been living with HIV for over 20 years. He is employed by The Detroit Heath Department and is a state certified HIV counselor and tester. He along with his wife, Paula have been instrumental in interpreting the nuances of the HIV/AIDS community through education. The Rebirth is truly trying to do some positive things within the city. Get out and support them. For more information, check out their website at TheRebirthDetroit.com... See you there. |
