Metal’s quietest success story Killswitch Engage hits gold with their last record, The End of Heartache, and shows that you don’t have be completely dark and evil in order to keep street cred.
On “As Daylight Dies”, the Boston band ups the production level and scale of the sound, and to some degree it works well. The album starts with the crushing title track, in which singer Howard Jones bounces back and forth between raging metal vocalist and sincere and soulful crooner. This is where the band gets its strength and shows it on growingly melodic tracks like the first single “My Curse”, and “The Arms of Sorrow”. Guitarist Joel Stroetzel wails like he is the second coming of Zakk Wylde through most of the album, and combines with wildman guitarist Adam Dutkeicwicz for a dose of metal that would be suitable enough for radio. Even with all of the strong tracks on the record, “As Daylight Dies” has the tendency to get somewhat repetitive towards the end. The album just misses classic status, but still stands as metal’s best current chance to break through to the mainstream. GRADE: B |
