Coming out of Northern California, Street To Nowhere is starting to make some noise with their major label debut “Charmingly Awkward”. The Capitol Records release shows off an enjoyable blend of thoughtful acoustic material and jangly pop hooks.
Led by singer/guitarist Dave Smallen, the band keeps their indie rock roots fully intact, even with the switch to a big label. On “Charmingly Awkward”, the album starts with a charging rock gem in “Screamin’”, where Smallen’s vocals shows off introspective, and sometimes angsty voice through the album. Songs like “Tipsy” has the band wailing like a pissed off house band at an event they do not really want to be at; but that becomes the beauty of the song. It is quite comedic and got a chuckle to hear lyrics like “All I need is you tipsy”. People can completely relate to a song like “Waste My Life For You”, which talks about changing your lifestyle for a significant other, than learning to regret it later on. If I'd only had some more of that advice throughout my life; this reviewer might just be better off. The band goes off into a little more experimental approach in tracks like “Boxcars, Boxcars, Boxcars”, which throws strings into the mix and provides the twists and turns to the album. There is strong guitar work from Will Hauser on songs like “Dead Cliché” as well. This album envokes moments of indie rock stars Nada Surf, as well as moments that may have you thinking of a far less murky version of Radiohead. The single “They’re Not Like Us” is starting to grab some radio attention, and could pick up steam throughout the winter months. Street to Nowhere toured with fellow west coast rockers The Format this summer on their tour. They're currently touring with Straylight Run, (started in early November, and will wrap in San Francisco on December 13th - the tour rolled through Detroit on November 7th). The band will be touring into 2007, and as “They’re Not Like Us” takes off, you could be hearing a lot more of Street to Nowhere in the upcoming year. StreetToNowhere
