Two winners were picked: one by the audience, one by the judges. The audience award went to Road to Victory. The judge’s award was for Police Report. I interviewed the creator of Police Report, Gary Bosek.
- TS: How long have you been making films?
GB:Since 1994.
- TS:How did you get started? Did you go to film school?
GB:I started making films through Clintondale Schools’ educational program and through a public access channel in Lake Orion. I started with a 15-minute student film that is a romantic comedy involving time travel. I also worked on a comedy show and various other short films.
I didn’t go to film school. I do have an associate’s degree in liberal arts from Oakland Community College.
- TS: Do you have a regular cast and crew?
GB:I have a few recurring cast and crew, but not a specific troop or anything like that. One of my biggest challenges is finding reliable help. However, after years of trial and error, I finally believe I finally have what is the start of a core group of reliable people that I am consistently working with. I’m hoping that I can continue adding to this group of dedicated people who have a passion for filmmaking.
- TS: Do you raise money or incur costs yourself?
GB: I incur most costs myself. But I’m working on finding ways to finance more projects.
- TS:What do you shoot with? Edit with?
GB: I shoot mostly hi-def video and use Final Cut Pro.
- TS: I’ve seen three of your films: Back There, Hire Me and Police Report. Could you briefly describe how these films came to be and what you hope audiences take away from each?
GB: I’m very methodical when I create a film. I start with a location and build ideas from there. There’s also a lot of improvisation during filming.
I aim to entertain, mostly. But hopefully the audience comes away with a little more than that. Most of what I create has a psychological edge to it. So perhaps my films make people think.
- TS: Have you shot and edited any other films besides Back There, Hire Me and Police Report?
GB: I’ve just finished Party of a Lifetime. This is a short that involves a guy who goes to a party and then finds that he can’t leave. I’m also working on another short that skewers the bleakness of office work.
- TS: Who are you favorite directors? Films?
GB: I like Stephen Speilberg and Alfred Hitchcock. I also enjoy the works of Rod Serling, as a writer. My favorite films would have to be It’s A Wonderful Life, Crash and Shawshank Redemption.
- TS: Is this your first competition? Will you enter others – with Police Report or other films?
GB: I previously entered The Home Town Video Festival. I definitely plan to enter more competitions; just not sure which or with what right now.
