After a packed show at the Machine Shop, the Cleveland metal collective Mushroomhead will be hitting Harpo’s this Friday, October 27th. Soil, Brand New Sin and the Autumn Offering will be opening the show up.

Coming out of the tough, grimy, industrial landscape of Cleveland can leave anyone in a dark and moody state of mind. It is no surprise that some of the best music to come out of the Midwestern town has that same sort of attitude. Mushroomhead is the 800 pound gorilla of Cleveland hard rock and metal and has dominated that scene for well over a decade.

Now that their deal is done with Universal Records, the seven man force has found a new home at Megaforce Records, once known for starting a couple small bands you might have heard of, Anthrax and Metallica.

With their new album “Savior Sorrow”, Mushroomhead mixes elements of metal, electronica and goth that creates a satisfying eerie experience. The album takes on a thunderous start, with the track “12 Hundred”, which may be the most straight ahead metal track the band has ever done.

Lead by the dual vocal attack of Jeffrey Nothing and new singer Waylon, the band sends the fans slamming their heads to crushers such as “Tattoo”, and the introspective “Damage Done”. Leadoff single “Simple Survival” hits as hard and is as accessible as the band’s most accessible song, 2003’s stellar “Sun Doesn’t Rise”. The song is currently picking up steam at rock radio, and aims to become the band’s biggest track yet. The band delves into more gothic piano strains and electronic beats in the highlight songs on the album, “Just Pretending” and “Save Us”.

The band underwent a change, as former front man J. Mann left the band, and new singer Waylon came and the band hasn’t missed a beat. Waylon tackles the songs as intensely as the former lead singer, and might actually have a better vocal range as well.

The band’s intensity and flare for the theatrics carry over to their stage show, where face paint, masks and military style outfits give the band an eye catching visual appeal on stage.

Mushroomhead will be supporting “Savior Sorrow”, as they hit the road starting September 20th, in their hometown in Cleveland. The tour will last through November, and Mushroomhead is sure to tour again throughout the upcoming year.

If “Savior Sorrow” is your first time delving into the experience that is Mushroomhead, what took you so long?

Mushroomhead’s “Savior Sorrow” is out September 19th. Mushroomhead has one more Michigan area show this fall:
