If you live in the Detroit metro area and are a sports fan (or fan of gambling), your decade was made a few weeks back when Windsor revealed formerly secretive plans to open a sports book at Casino Windsor. Every sports junkie will be salivating at the idea of making money off their amateur prognostication skills, and then bragging to their friends how much money they made picking some obscure game that made them enough to buy some Cuban cigars and sneak them over the border.

If you know anyone that bets on sports, you know that every bettor has his team he always bet on, and some superstitions that he will never break. Some people think that betting on a certain team is bad luck, but the risk of winning large amounts of money lures them into placing those bets anyways.

I am not a heavy sports bettor (usually only when I am in Vegas), but like everyone else that places their hard earned money on the hopes and dreams of teams I barely know, I have my own system when it comes to betting. So, I am going to give you my advice for when to go to Casino Windsor (or if you plan on going to Vegas, or just some illegal bookie) to battle the throngs of middle aged men in golf shirts or younger guys in throwback jerseys.

With the opening of the sports book coming at a very lucrative time of year (start of football season), here are the teams to bet (and not to bet) on this fall:

College Football:
• University of Michigan: I don’t bet on Michigan games out of principle and respect for my favorite college football team. I wouldn’t bet on them anyhow, because Michigan loses a lot of spreads. They were favored to beat Central Michigan by 28, and won by 24, so if you bet on Michigan, you lost. Much like quarterback Chad Henne, Michigan is unreliable when betting and should be avoided at all costs.
• Putting money on Tennessee and Florida State are risky propositions this year. Both teams are currently ranked high. But the teams are shaky in both offense and defense, so make sure you avoid them as well.
• Ohio State/Notre Dame: I lumped these two schools together because when combined, they are the devil incarnate. It still pains me to realize that these teams have fans, but hey, even Gilbert Goffried has fans too. Even though I despise these teams, they are better teams to bet on. Both these teams cover their spreads often. Now, if we can only get these teams to lose, I will be truly happy.

  Pro Football:

• Detroit Lions: Always, bet on a Lions game. Bet AGAINST the Lions when you bet. Even though they surprisingly covered the spread against the Seahawks on Sunday, this team is notorious for being a great team to bet against. So, next week, make sure you bet on the Bears, and you will be raking in the dough.
• Also, always bet against the 49ers and Browns, because no two teams are sadder in the NFL than they. If the spread against these teams are anything over 2 points, take the other team. You can’t go wrong….
• Probably the two teams I’ve had most success with in the past are AFC teams, New England and Indianapolis. Usually, their high powered offenses will lead you to the money most times out. Just don’t bet on Indianapolis when it comes down to winning the Super Bowl. It’s a bet I’ve been burned on many of times.

So, I may not be one of those guys on the betting shows all over Fox Sports and other sports channels, but I think these are logical picks they should help you weave through the mounds of information people are gonna be throwing at you in Windsor.

And if you want my Super Bowl pick all the way in September (knowing it is probably gonna be wrong), it’s the rematch of Super Bowl 38, Carolina versus New England. As you know, we’ve got a long way to go before then, so don't place your bets just yet.
