We are now half way through the 2006 season of Midnight Movies at The Main Art Theatre, an annual tradition of summer in the Metro Detroit area. The Main Art Theatre in Royal Oak plays a different film each weekend from Memorial Day to Labor Day every year. These films range from the critically acclaimed to the critically shamed. But each has a following – a cult following, if you will. To someone, each film is a beloved classic.

In years past, The Main Art has played Dead Alive, The Princess Bride and Rock ‘N’ Roll High School. Most years, it has always included a showing of Evil Dead, which is sadly absent from this year’s roster.

Evil Dead features local cult fave, Bruce Campbell. Bruce is a native of the Detroit area but has seen some major film success with small roles in movies such as The Majestic and Sky High. He has bit parts in most of pal Sam Raimi’s (Director, Spiderman 1, 2 & 3) movies. You may even know him as Brisco County, Jr. or Autolycus from the Xena and Hercules TV series. But he has become notorious for his roles in several Sci-Fi channel originals and most recently for his role as Elvis in the film Bubba Ho-Tep.

I was shocked not to see at least one of Bruce’s films in the line-up for the summer, particularly with respect to the great response Bubba Ho-Tep received when it premiered at this very theater. Nonetheless, there are some great films scheduled yet for this year.

If you haven’t gone yet, you’ve already missed Pulp Fiction, Pee Wee’s Big Adventure and The Muppet Movie, to name a few. Alas, I have missed all but Pulp Fiction, but that was one film I could not miss seeing in the theater again. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve watched the film altogether, but the recent midnight viewing brings my in-theater viewing total to eight.

Don’t miss out on any more of your favorites! Click on Landmark Theaters to take you to the schedule of remaining films. Or just look below.

And I’ll be seeing you at the movies – at midnight!
