After two sold out shows at the State Theatre over the past two years, New York’s Taking Back Sunday graduated to the big time, hitting the summer sheds for the first time. In a 65-minute set in front of a nearly sold out crowd of 7,000 at Meadowbrook, the band worked through sounds from their indie days, as well as their new major label material.

Complete with a marquee, to resemble the album’s cover art from their new album, Louder Now lead singer Adam Lazarra and company systematically tore through songs that had the crowd of mostly suburbanite teenagers singing along.

The current single, “MakeDamnSure” was played quite early, in between much of the band’s older material. New tracks such as “Liar” and “Spin” showed that the band is a technically sound band that was not dealing with sound or vocal issues during the show. At times, Lazarra was pushing his voice (while flinging his mic around wildly) with his in-between song banter, and sounded like a character from South Park at times, but his vocals during songs were fine. Towards the end the set, TBS launched into “This Photograph Is Proof” and kept their fans pleased with the performance. Even with rain, more rain, and some overacted stage banter, Taking Back Sunday proved that they were more than able to make the transition from indie favorite to big label stars.

If Taking Back Sunday displayed a lot of energy during their set, Angels and Airwaves only showed a few bursts of energy during their hour long set. The new band, fronted by former Blink 182 guitarist Tom DeLonge, used lush soundscapes and U2-style effects that should have wowed the crowd; but really left most of them standing around aimlessly. Except for the first single “The Adventure,” and the Box Car Racer track “There Is,” the crowd was somewhat apathetic to the new band. You cant blame the crowd for their reaction; Angels and Airwaves comes off as monotonous in their sound, and really seemed like songs ran into one another. Plus, the band had to play to a crowd being drenched by a downpour, so that didn’t help matters.

New York City’s Head Automatica tried to pull off a Hives-style performance, and should have just kept to the music. With songs like “Beating Heart Baby” and the new song “Graduation Day,” Head Automatica had some of the catchiest songs of the evening, but their 25-minute set was a little on the short side. The band’s best song, “Brooklyn Is Burning” was left out of the set, disappointing at least one person in attendance.
