A message to Detroiters: Not all things that come out of Portland, Oregon are a complete waste. Ok, the Trailblazers are terrible, and mentioning the name Joey Harrington is bound to drive Lions fans to tears. But blasting out of Portland, 800 Octane is proving that punk and fury can exist in one of the “Best Towns to Live In”, according to numerous studies.

The band’s old school punk sound puts most of the punk-lite drivel that litters MTV to shame, and is comparable to contemporaries such as Rise Against. On their 2004 release, Rise Again, 800 Octane creates a furious sound that seems larger than the four members of the band. Led by singer/bassist Dave Chaney, the band recalls acts like Rollins Band and Black Flag (yes, both bands had the same singer) on tracks, such as the title track, and Go For Broke.

Guitarist Eric Ackerson blends punk riffs, with hard rock chops on the 13 track album. On the track Apology To You, Ackerson opens the tune with a AC/DC-esque riff, before punching through with the band’s signature riffs. Guitarist Justin Britton and drummer Jim Lund fill out the band, and make sure that the rebellious sound is sustained throughout.

Over the years, the band has played over 450 shows, and has played with mostly up and coming punk-rock acts, such as Tiger Army and punk legends Face to Face. The band even opened up for shlock-rock heroes Gwar. Now, that would have been a weird bill to say the least.

The band will be on tour this year, in support of the 2004 release of Rise Again. Keep posted to their website for further details. But if they tour with Gwar, watch out for fake blood and fake limbs.
