Emerging from the usually quiet and serene West side of Michigan, the Grand Rapids based FledFive is making some noise and hoping to break big with their blend of melodic hard rock. Founded in 2000, FledFive is releasing their fourth, and self titled, album. They deliver high energy rock riffs from guitarist Dan Banker, while lead singer Brian Grooms provides the melody, remiscient of bands like Trapt and Seether. Bassist John Dorer and drummer Nathan Grooms are the solid rythym backbone of the band, and make sure that the edge of the band remains intact. They're well worth checking out on their myspace page, and I'll continue to purchase their albums.

On their new album, the band launches into dark and moody tunes, such as “Payback”. But the band keeps enough melody in their music to avoid the mopefests that has plagued every Staind album made. Some of the best musicianship comes in the track “Go”, which shows hard riffs that echoes some of the band’s favorite groups, such as Black Label Society. The 13 track album showcases the band as the hard rock force that could expand their fan base outside of West Michigan.

The band is a self promotion machine, and taken the “do-it-yourself” approach to levels in which most bands would balk at. The band is self managed, and have released all four albums on their own label. The band recently hosted a record release party at the major Grand Rapids venue Orbit Room with over 600 fans in attendance. The band has various dates throughout the summer across West Michigan, and hope to preach their word to the masses.

Fled Five could be the next afterformentioned Trapt; a band who promoted themselves through the early days, only to find platinum success later on through a ravenous fan base. Grand Rapids could use a success story; and FledFive would be more than willing to fly the flag for hard rock from that area.
