Artist Spotlight- Taylor Hawkins & The Coattail Riders

In case you are living under a rock, do not have the internet, or just do not listen to rock music; you realize that Taylor Hawkins plays drums for one of rock’s biggest bands: The Foo Fighters. But with his Foo Fighters involvement still going strong, Hawkins got the itch for the chance to try something new…

As work commenced for the Foo Fighters’ platinum double-disc release “In Your Honor” early last year, Hawkins began to work on material of his own. Hawkins picked up former Joe Walsh Band drummer Drew Hester and former Jane’s Addiction bassist Chris Chaney and formed his solo band, the Coattail Riders.

When artists put out a solo album; especially drummers fronting a band; fans tend to ask: Can they really sing? We all learned Tommy Lee couldn’t sing a lick, and there are plenty of others that fall into that category. But for every Lee; we get Hawkins’ Foo Fighter band mate; Dave Grohl, who becomes more entertaining and melodic than could have been imagined initially after the end of Nirvana, and the beginning of the Foos. As for Hawkins; he surprised people with his “Cold Day In the Sun” track on “In Your Honor”, and continues to sound great throughout his solo album.

The self titled album that came out of the sessions is an eclectic blend of 70’s laid back rock, 90’s indie rock, and acoustic based tracks that showcase Hawkins’ more melodic tendencies. The first track and single “Louise” turns out to be a pop-rock gem, and if given the right push by radio, could be a good driving track for spring. It’s definitely made it into my rotation.

“Walking Away” is an interesting cross between The Guess Who and Queens of the Stone Age, which shows the diversity of the album. Tracks such as “It’s OK Now” and “Drive Me Insane” mixes that melodic mid-90’s indie rock scene, but gives that sound a more modern feel.

“End of the Line”, and “Wasted Energy” are tracks that would have been as equally at home on the second half of “In Your Honor”, as it does here on Hawkins’ solo record.

Bassist Chris Chaney provides much flavor on the album, including strong bass lines on “Walking Away”, among other tracks. He proves to be a very versatile addition to the band, as well as drummer Hester.

The Coattail Riders will be releasing their self-titled album on March 7th, and will be on tour this spring. Make sure to check them out when they swing into Detroit… This is a must buy for all true rock fans.
