“Don’t think that I don’t know Detroit!” lead Foo Fighter Dave Grohl challenged the crowd of 11,000, during their co-headlining set with Weezer. After telling tales of past shows at St. Andrew’s Hall, and running red lights in downtown Detroit; it really did come across that Grohl actually does, know Detroit. In addition to their knowledge of the town… both Foo Fighters and Weezer put on enjoyable sets.

Weezer came out to the chords of “My Name is Jonas”, as the group put on a 70 minute set. The set was similar to the one that the group played in May at the State Theatre. The always passionate Weezer fans seemed to pay no attention to opener Kaiser Chiefs, and waited to sing every lyric to the band’s songs. The group seemed probably more comfortable playing the current material, such as “This is Such A Pity”; as well as past tunes like “Dope Nose”, and “El Scorcho”.

Lead singer Rivers Cuomo stayed very quiet; while bassist (and Toledo raised) Scott Shriner chatted with his parents from stage. The group launched into their first hit “Undone (The Sweater Song)” to end the set, sending the legion of late teens/early 20’s fans wailing along. In a move perhaps lifted from Green Day’s set; a fan got to play “Undone” on stage with the band, and got to keep the guitar afterwards.

If Weezer was the favorite of the girls in the audience, the Foo Fighters brought the riffs and playful banter for the guys in the audience. The group launched into the title track of their “In Your Honor” album. The group seemed more at ease on stage than Weezer, and seemed to bring across the more classic rock show. Guitarist/lead singer Dave Grohl tore through tunes early on such as “All My Life”, and “My Hero”, as the Foo Fighters fans tried to outsing the Weezer fans.

About halfway into the set, Grohl surprised everyone by appearing on a small stage at the back of the arena; to do an acoustic version of “Everlong”. The band had a near perfect encore of “Breakout”, and and ended their set with their 1997 hit “Monkey Wrench”, giving everyone a solid night of 90’s survivors.

If you put the bands face to face though; this reviewer thinks there would be one clear winner for the night: That would be the band who knows how to run red lights in the middle of downtown Detroit… Now THAT'S a talent worth mentioning.
