I already know what you are thinking. This article is going to be in bad taste, and I can already sense the people who read this article starting to type long winded messages, about how insensitive I am about this horrific topic. But I want to take a look at how the Hurricane affected the music world, not so much the catastrophic situation, and the physical aftermath of the hurricane. None of the physical and operational issues will be discussed… Time Magazine, every news outlet, and every free paper in town has covered it, and will ad nauseam. This is a tragedy without precedent. If you DO want to find out more about hurricane relief and updates; please visit the following sites. I’ve done my own quiet part to help, and I hope you do too. Hurricane Katrina blew into South Florida, right around the time that the VMA Awards were approaching. Well, if you watched the show, you could tell that the winds from Katrina weren’t the only things that blew. Watching P.Diddy overplaying the “sexy” factor of the show was laughable at best. As he danced around to “Relax”, for the 12,456th tribute to the Notorious B.I.G.; one particular Detroit Buzz columnist yearned for the days when Christian Slater hosted the awards. Yeah, you heard me, Christian Slater… R. Kelly performed for his audition for the new musical “Momma, I am Trapped in the Closet with a Big Shiny Gun”, and probably got the lead role. And MC Hammer was there? They must have felt bad for Hammer; especially with 50 Cent pimping everything known to man. Green Day did win a bunch of awards, and Kelly Clarkston got dripping wet at the end. So, it wasn’t all that bad… Wow, I am getting happy feelings about Kelly all wet, but I will save that for when Detroit Buzz does their version of Penthouse Forum. The winds even got to Suge Knight, who mysteriously was shot in the leg at a pre-party event. Later on, it was found out that Suge reportedly shot himself, to get his name in the press. Hey Suge, blame it on the 80 mile an hour winds. The winds put the gun in your own hand, and pulled the trigger. Just once, I want to see P.Diddy and Suge in the same room, it would be the greatest reality show of all time, hands down. The horrific hurricane clipped Key West, where no drunks were harmed on Duval Street, and Jimmy Buffett could continue to sell beer coasters and mouse pads at his restaurant. So far, the hurricane wasn’t too bad, right? Then, the worst possible scenario hit: a near direct hit on New Orleans. The levees broke, and much of the city was underwater. Collossal screwups occurred at all levels of government. It was reported that Fats Domino was missing, somewhere in New Orleans. They eventually found him alive, and then found out that he (and his career) has been missing since sometime in June 1968. New Orleans native Master P believed a home of his was destroyed in the aftermath. One can only hope the master tapes for “Make ‘Em Say Uuugh!” were destroyed. If so, that would be the ONLY good thing to come out of this. I am disturbed by the fact that organizers of the annual Voodoo Music Festival still hoped to have the event in New Orleans on October 28th, and 29th this year. That's just crazy thinking. I am sorry, you will have to chalk it up as a lost year, and let the city rebuild. During the first of many telethons to take place over the next few months; Kanye West stated that President Bush “did not care about black people”. Sorry Kanye, whether I agree or disagree with you, the telethon isn’t the right place to be spouting that off at. Wrong venue. Bad timing. The hurricane is only a distant memory now to the Weather Channel; but is still a real situation to millions who are displaced by the storm. What I said in this article was somewhat tongue in cheek, but there are real people, with real lives that won’t be laughing for a while. But please, why did I have to pay freakin’ $3.30 a gallon for gas for a week? Now, there’s another group of scam artists I would like to get my hands on. Now get out there and do your part.
