The Independent Film Channel is paying homage to punk music during the entire month of July. Thank you, IFC! In a world gone mad…sorry, too many summer blockbusters. But, the world has gone mad. How else can you explain the popularity of such pop tarts as Lindsay Lohan, particularly as a musician (and I use that term as loosely as Ms. Lohan herself), the barrage of reality TV shows and several attempts to create PG-13 horror films to reach a broader audience? Horror for kids? Argh! Not to mention that no one in Hollywood seems to be able to green light any script that isn’t a remake, a sequel or an adaptation of an old TV show. Add in the state of the economy, politics, a war and the religious right… Is it any wonder punk has reincarnated? Punk is about expressing a rage for which there is no other outlet but loud, fast, obnoxious music and slamming into your fellow man or woman. And a little about freaking out ‘the normals’. To get your much-needed punk fix, watch IFC all this month. You can choose from documentaries, films, videos and shows. Catch Punk Attitude, an original IFC “punkumentary” displaying the history of punk culture. Check out Matt “Shaggy” Lillard pre-Doo in SLC Punk. See Green Day’s Jesus of Suburbia video uncut, totaling a mere 15 minutes. And definitely watch the show that got me watching, Henry’s Film Corner, starring none other than the man, the myth, the punk god, Henry Rollins. For all the shows and schedules, check out IFCTV.com. Or better yet, be a little punk and watch without knowing what will be on next! If you do that this Saturday July 9, you should ‘get punked’ in a good way. Bullocks to you, Ashton! |
