Ok, this is not Airbourne; the Australian band who sounds like AC/DC. This is the Airborne Toxic Event, the far different sounding indie rock band out of Los Angeles, founded in 2006 by singer/guitarist Mikel Jollett. The band started when Jollett was battling a few autoimmune diseases and was developing prose about his struggles with the issues, but soon it seemed as if he was developing lyrics for an album, and after joining up with a few other musicians, a band was formed. ATE first started playing shows in LA in the fall of 2006 and created quite a buzz in the LA area for a year and a half. The band regularly played the Spaceland club in LA and labels began to take notice. After being courted by various major labels, the band opted for a reputable indie label at Majordomo Records and was signed in April 2008.
Jollet wasted no time and was booked on Carson Daly’s late night show within weeks of the signing and had the self-titled album released on August 5th. Jollett’s voice helps lifts songs like “This Is Nowhere” and “Gasoline,” which has heads into a bouncy, garage rock sound album at times that doesn’t come off as an attempt at a relic. The first single, “Somewhere Around Midnight,” cracked the Top 40 Modern Rock songs on the Billboard Charts. The debut album reached the Heatseekers chart on Billboard, where it reached #7 on the chart for up and coming artists. The band started a tour with the Fratellis on September 1st and will be hitting St. Andrew’s Hall on Monday, September 8th. It will give you a chance to check out LA’s answer to what indie garage rock is supposed to sound like.
The Airborne Toxic Event will be opening for the Fratellis on Monday, September 8th. Tickets are $18 and are available at www.ticketmaster.com. Additional dates can be found at www.theairbornetoxicevent.com.
