You know you have an odd sense of humor when your drummer’s name is Puppy
Mills. Whether it's a slam at the harsh conditions of where some dogs are forced
to breed and be sold or just a name to
draw in animal cruelty enthusiasts, New York duo The Gay Blades is gearing up to release their
debut album Ghosts due out in September. The New York City based
band met up a few years back (according to the press release) as lead
singer Clark Westfield and Mills were working at a traveling sideshow. Westfield was juggling and Mills was taking tickets. Perhaps the
sideshow fueled the band’s taste in music and the different
directions the band wanted to go in. The band’s sound
is a mix of straight forward indie rock, with some moments of over
the top bombast style tracks, a’la Queen. Tracks like “Hey
She Say” and “O Spot” fully show off Clark’s
vocals, while the remix for “O Spot” definitely sends the
band into the more bombastic sound that fans raved about when the
band played South by Southwest this past year. The album is being
self-released on the band’s Triple Crown Records and will be
followed by an upcoming 7-inch vinyl release, with two new singles
coming out soon after the September 23rd release.
The band is out touring
through the end of August on a tour with The Sleeping and a fellow east coast band we’ve covered before, Envy on the Coast. The
tour lasts through
August 29th, but hits Detroit this
Friday (August 22nd) as the tour rolls through at the
Magic Stick. It should be a very entertaining opening act to start
the night off right, and see just how over the top the band can be.
The Gay Blades
play with the Sleeping and Envy on the Coast at the Magic Stick on
Friday, August 22nd. Tickets are $12 and are available at
