Festival Preview - Lollapalooza Print E-mail

ImageAfter last year’s solid, but not overwhelming, 3rd Chicago edition of the long time running festival, festival organizer Perry Farrell knew he had to pull out some stops. He knew that with summer festivals gaining popularity as dozens of new pop up this year, he had to deliver or risk becoming irrelevant. Let’s just say Perry did not disappoint this year as he’s dished out the best Lollapalooza lineup to date (that’s even counting 1992). Over 100 bands will be in downtown Chicago this weekend for the 2008 addition of Lollapalooza. He not only brings bands that never see places like Detroit (yeah, you Radiohead and Rage Against the Machine) or grisly veterans of the festival (Gnarls Barkley, Nine Inch Nails), but new additions to the bill (too many to count). So, instead of reviewing every single band there, let’s give you a rundown or what you should be checking out each day at Lollapalooza 2008:

Friday, August 1st
-Do you like the game “Rock Band”? Most of us do, even if we can't sing well for the game. Well, the band that puts those unknown songs on the game, Bang Camaro, plays at 11:30. Just as some people will be walking in.

-Amy Winehouse will… oh wait... no, she won't. But another English singer who’s got a similar voice, Duffy, will be giving her best to Crackhouse as she plays at 3:15 on the Playstation stage.

-Playing way too early is the Ohio band The Black Keys, at 4:15. The band is out supporting their great album Attack and Release and will play an pre-party show Thursday night as well.

-Starting a U.S. tour with an album due out probably in early 2009, Bloc Party will be hitting the stage at 6:15 on the AT&T stage. Check out the new song, “Mercury,” at their MySpace page.

-All Midwesterners getting screwed out of seeing Radiohead may want to go and check out their set at 8:00. You may not get another chance to see these guys. Not that I know anything, but you never know with them.

Saturday, August 2nd

-Alternative Press dubbed New Jersey band Brand New as the “American Radiohead”. The band is decent, but even that comparison is a little much. Check them out at 4:30 at the AT&T stage.

-Lupe Fiasco makes his hometown appearance and third time in a row at Lollapalooza at 6:30.

-Remember the Toadies? Yeah. “Possum Kingdom.” Yeah. Love or hate the song, the band is back and playing at 7:30.

-Wilco vs. Rage Against the Machine: Tough choice here... Not really. If you want angry, political diatribes that are sorely missing these days, Jeff Tweedy ain't gonna give them to you. Go see Rage.

Sunday, August 3rd

-Speaking of politics, Georgia alt-rockers The Whigs will get an early slot here, playing at 1:15 at the MySpace stage. No, you can't be their friend either.

-The other drunken Irish folk-punk band, Flogging Molly play at 5:15 and it will be one hell of a time. They might kick your ass if you request “I’m Shipping Up To Boston.”

-Saul Williams turned his spoken word and added some trip-hop and industrial beats to create one of the most intriguing albums of the year, The Rise and Fall of Niggy Tardust. He will be performing at 5:00.

-Ok, The Odd Couple isn’t gonna be the hit that Gnarls Barkley’s last album was, but still go and check them out at 6:15. It’s that or the return of late 80s alternative band Love and Rockets.

-Trent vs. Kanye to close out the show: Who do you choose? Unlike our smart ass answer for Saturday, this proves to be tough. Mr. Reznor might win by default; but if I say it real loud, Kanye might talk s--- about us in the press and not go out on stage until 4AM. So, I’ll pick Kanye just so he doesn’t blog about it. Nobody wins there.

Lollapalooza 2008 lasts from Friday, August 1st through Sunday, August 3rd. Tickets are $205 for the three day pass, and $80 for single day passes. More information and a full listing of set times is available at www.lollapalooza.com.
