The Famine with Demon Hunter St. Andrew’s Hall Image

Dallas based band the Famine has something in common with headliner Demon Hunter- they are both bands out on their first national tours. Due to the day job commitments of Demon Hunter, they are finally getting time off to get cross the country. As for The Famine, they are hopping on their first national tour, behind the release of their debut record “The Raven and the Reaping”, which came out May 27th. Image

The band’s blistering brand of metal owes a bit to their Southern roots. Lead singer Ryan McCaddon says the some of the bands’ material sounds like “Suffocation (long time death metal band) covering Pantera”. The band’s riffs, courtesy of guitarist Andy Godwin sounds does in fact take elements of the latter band mentioned. The tracks on the record, such as “The South Will Rise” and “Scar The Earth” have a groove to them much like Pantera’s Dimebag Darrell did, and transition with each other better than a lot of metal records out there today.

Singer McCaddon played with the headliners in Demon Hunter for their first two records, before starting The Famine a few years back. His vocals hit with a lot more intensity at times than his former band does, who opts for more melody in their music these days.

The Famine will be on the road with Demon Hunter throughout the rest of the month of June, before wrapping on July 1st. So get down to the always sweltering and wild St. Andrews to see a night of southern fried metal when the Famine hits town.

Tickets are $16 and are available at Ticketmaster.com. Additional dates can be found at www.myspace.com/thefaminedestroys.

Year Long Disaster with Burning Brides- Magic Stick Image

If the name Daniel Davies doesn’t look a little familiar to you, at least the last name might. The singer is the son of legendary Kinks front man Dave Davies. Daniel had been toiling around bands in Los Angeles for a few years before meeting bass player Rich Mullins while buying booze in LA.

And after the missing piece of the puzzle was found (ex-Third Eye Blind member Brad Hargreaves) the band started their quest for the big time. The band released their self-titled debut record last year, and is firmly based in the pure hard rock associated with the band they are touring with, the Burning Brides.

Davies’ voices bellows on tracks like the lead off “Leda Atomica” and “It Ain’t Luck” doesn’t mess around with overdone guitar solos or overpowering vocals. The album grooves throughout with tight vocals and riffs. Hargreaves seems to be letting loose on drums, after he was forced to play radio friendly jams with Third Eye Blind.

The band’s tour with the Burning Brides will last through June 24th.

Get to know Year Long Disaster on tour with Foo Fighters and Supergrass.

The band has toured with like-minded bands such as Clutch and the Sword. YLD’s video for “Leda Atomica” was featured on Adult Swim and was directed by Matt Maiellaro, creator of “Aqua Teen Hunger Force”. The band was recently featured in Rolling Stone as one of “10 Artists to Watch”. And with riffs like you hear on this album, its not hard to see why people are keeping an eye out for Year Long Disaster.

Tickets are $10 and are available at Ticketmaster.com. Additional dates can be found at MySpace.com/yearlongdisaster
