It was just a couple
years ago when this preview wasn’t very long at all.
In fact, there weren’t that many festivals the entire summer, let alone
enough to break them down by month. But with tour costs rising and
bands paying more for gas, hotels, and groupies, more bands are opting
for the festival circuit this year, more so now than ever. This year
offers a slew of festivals that cover nearly every major market in
the country. At first glance, it looks like Jack Johnson and the
Flaming Lips are hellbent on playing every one of these festivals
this year. Most of the
lineups are just now being confirmed and other lineups will continue to
fluctuate, but we have a pretty good idea of who's going to be where
just about every weekend this summer; here's what's going on in May. Rock on The Range - May 17 & 18th- Columbus, OH After last year’s one day fest in Columbus, organizers expanded it to two days. And they pulled off a hell of a coup for the first night; with the first official show from Stone Temple Pilots in seven years. Hopefully Scott Weiland is clean this weekend. Also, Disturbed will be road testing their new album the first night. Back for the first time in five years, Richard Patrick and Filter will be playing one of their first shows back at ROTR. Killswitch Engage and Serj Tankian are highlights on the first day, as well as the Australian band Airbourne. Check them out and see if they sound like another famous band from Australia. The second night features Kid Rock bringing his rock 'n roll revival to Columbus, as well as Seether and Papa Roach. Make sure to check with teenagers metal young’ns Black Tide on Sunday as well.
What to Expect: Lots of talk about STP and perhaps a Guns 'n Roses reunion rumor; no Hinder (thank god), and a lot of scarlet and grey (scary thought). Tickets: One day passes are available for $49.50, two day passes are $99. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster.com. Website: www.rockontherange.com.
Sasquatch Festival - May 24-26 - Quincy, WA Heading back to the Gorge in the picturesque Pacific Northwest, Sasquatch got themselves some of alt-rock’s biggest luminaries as R.E.M. and The Cure dominate the lineup. R.E.M. tourmates Modest Mouse will be playing a home state show. The Swedish garage rock titans The Hives will also be on the bill, as well as the quirky New Zealand faux-folk rock duo of Flight of the Conchords. Jermaine and Bret will be playing Sasquatch as their second season of their show will premiere in June. And in a “Where Are They Now” file, the Breeders start their reunion tour at Sasquatch this year.
What to Expect: Lots of grown-up Cure fans (makeup optional) and maybe that crazy girl from the “Flight Of the Conchords” show. Tickets: $76.50 per day, limited availability Website: www.sasquatchfestival.com . |
