Perhaps the most
popular band in the whole prog-rock genre, El Paso’s The Mars
Volta prove that you can still create thought provoking lyrics
and challenging musical arrangements and still win fans beyond
your core following. After critically acclaimed albums Frances The
Mute and Amphitecture, Mars Volta
brings their diverse sound back on tour as the band heads out on the
road after a early pre-release tour with a more proper tour. The band
is touring behind their Bedlam In Goliath record, which
debuted at #4 on the Billboard Top 200 back in February. This makes
the band’s third record in a row to debut inside the upper
echelons of the album charts.Lead by former At The Drive-In vocalist Cedric Bixler and guitarist Omar Rodriquez-Lopez, the band has been rising through the rock ranks over much of this decade. Featuring 12 new songs, The Bedlam in Goliath wields an album-long story and could be the best of the band’s already critically acclaimed career. The first single “Wax Simulacra” is a quintessential piece from the band, taking the listener in many different directions in its tidy three minute structure. Bedlam lays off the 16-18 minute jams as in previous records for tighter and more concise, but just as majestic sounding tracks. Highlight tracks off the record include the frantic “Metatron” to the downright blissfully bizarre track “Soothsayer.” The band’s 2005 album, Frances The Mute was very well thought of by My City Buzz that year, being named the #2 album of that year. The band went on to sell a half million copies of that record, which featured “The Widow” and “L’Via Vasquez.” The band is in a midst of a tour which began in April and runs through a date at the Sasquatch Festival in Washington during Memorial Day weekend. The band rolls through Detroit on May 15th at the Fillmore Detroit. After the U.S. tour wraps, the band is off to Japan and Europe for summer dates. So, you don’t have too many more opportunities to check out the 'bedlam' that people are raving about. Mars Volta plays the Fillmore Detroit on Thursday, May 15th. Tickets are $36.75 and are available at www.ticketmaster.com. Additional dates can be found at www.thebedlam.net . |
