Back in 2006, some
people called northern Ontario’s Tokyo Police Club EP, A
Lesson In Crime the “best 16 minutes of music in recent
history." That’s not much to live up to as the band has
recently released their full length debut, Elephant Shell
on April 22nd. The garage influenced band is one of the
newest members of the Saddle Creek record label and creates an upbeat
garage/indie sound. Elephant Shell seems to be more of
a full vision of the band’s sound, with such tracks as
“Tessalate” and “Juno.” Lead by bassist/singer
David Monks, TPC formed just as the band was finishing high school.
The band released Lesson In Crime in 2006 and sold
30,000 copies of the EP, doing very well for a indie released debut
EP. Magazines like Entertainment Weekly praised the EP early on, and
helped the band secure a deal with Saddle Creek. Monks’ bassist
groove keeps many of the songs moving at a feverish pace, while
guitars from Josh Hook and drummer Greg Alsop keeps the album
exciting. The band is currently
on the road, and will be on the road in the States through May 23rd
before heading to Europe for summer festival dates. After two sold
out shows at the Opera House in Toronto, TPC hits the Magic Stick in
Detroit this Sunday, May 4th. If you want to check out one
of the most critically acclaimed albums of the year by one of the
most energetic bands around, check out Tokyo Police Club.
Tokyo Police Club
will be playing at the Magic Stick on Sunday. Tickets are $10 and are
available at www.ticketmaster.com.
