ImageThe Fort Lauderdale based band Another Black Day is out supporting Drowning Pool and Nonpoint on one of the band’s first cross-country tours. The band, formed in 2004, is gearing up to release their self-titled debut album on May 20. We had a chance to sit down with ABD’s lead singer, Matt Wilkof. Here is what Matt had to say to us about the band and the upcoming album:
On the response to the first single and inspiration behind their single Wicked Soul: “It’s been great so far, the single came out four weeks ago and a lot of stations have been picking up the single. I believe the single is already up to #25 on the rock charts. The song is pretty personal, I was just in a bad place during the writing of the song. I want people to interpret the song in a lot of different ways.”
On vocal and musical influences: “I would rather really not come out and say names of influences. I would rather not want people to say, 'Oh, they sound like this band and that band.' I would rather just let people hear the music and make their own decision.”
On how Another Black Day is different from the other bands he’s been in: “I think it’s a matter of taking things more seriously now than in the past. I think in the past, the bands I were in did it just to get laid. With this band, I am out to make a career out of this.”
On the most effective way for the band to get their name out: “I think it’s a mixture of a lot of things such as radio play, the live performance and MySpace hits. It seems to work where once we play live somewhere, the MySpace hits go up. If we get the song on the radio in a new market, the Myspace goes up and go people know us live.”
On what we can expect to hear on the upcoming record: “I think its got a little bit of everything. It has some really melodic moments and really heavy parts too. I feel we are a heavier band live. This isn’t going to be a band that writes a radio friendly song, just to watch the band explode. We feel everything on the album flows well together, and there is nothing on the album that sounds out of place just for the sake of the radio. I think we’re the type of band that fits with a lot of other bills live; like we could be on tour with Lamb of God or Puddle of Mudd.”
On the band’s response in certain cities: “The response has been great in cities like Detroit, as well as Rockford, Chicago, those sort of places. The program director at a station in Denver (KBPI-FM), played the song a lot. Its been great there, we played and headlined a show for 800 people. It was a great feeling.”
Speaking of dream bills, who is Matt’s dream bill to be on: “Either Metallica or Iron Maiden. Lots of great bands, but those are the ones that would I would love to be on.”
On the band’s upcoming tour plans: “We are on this tour through May 25 with a show in Rockford, and have a big tour that I can't say too much about yet going on during July and August.”
Another Black Day’s self titled record will be out May 20th on Bieler Brothers Records. Check out their debut single “Wicked Soul” and find additional dates at www.anotherblackday.net. .
