It was just a couple
years ago when this preview wasn’t very long at all. In fact, there weren’t that many festivals the entire summer, let alone enough to break them down by month. But with tour costs rising and bands paying more for gas, hotels, and groupies, more bands are opting
for the festival circuit this year, more so now than ever. This year
offers a slew of festivals that cover nearly every major market in
the country. At first glance, it looks like Jack Johnson and the
Flaming Lips are hellbent on playing every one of these festivals
this year. Most of the
lineups are just now being confirmed and other lineups will continue to fluctuate, but we have a pretty good idea of who's going to be where just about every weekend this summer, starting this weekend. New England Metal and Hardcore Festival - April 25-27 - Worchester, MA The tenth edition of the east coast tradition is back at the Palladium in Worchester. After last year’s Metal Blade Records dominated lineup, the other metal labels will be back in full force. The first night will feature this year’s Gigantour lineup, featuring Megadeth, In Flames and Children of Bodom. Saturday is headlined by Dimmu Borgir and local Mass-metal heroes Shadows Fall. And Ministry, in the midst of their last tour, will end up being one of the Sunday headliners, along with Behemoth. Virtually most bands you can think of in the underground metal scene will descend on the Palladium. What to Expect: Lots of black clothing, stale beer and a good fistfight or three. Tickets: One day passes are $45 and three day passes are $129 Website: www.metalandhardcorefestival.com Coachella 2008- April 25-27- Indio, CA After last year’s Rage Against the Machine headlined the event, it seems like anything is gonna be a letdown. But this year’s edition, striving for a big name, went and booked someone your parents may be more familiar with to headline: ex-Pink Floyd brainchild Roger Waters. Waters will headline Sunday night’s set with his performance of Dark Side of the Moon in its entirety. Mellow surfer rock hero Jack Johnson headlines the first night and starts his jaunts around the festival circuit this year. 90s critical darling Portishead headlines Saturday night, which may be a stretch for a headlining act for something the size of Coachella. Other acts include German techno innovators Kraftwerk, a reunion for the early alt-rock supergroup Love and Rockets and French techno upstarts Justice. And yes, Prince just got announced to the bill as well. Just as odd of a choice as Madonna was there two years ago. What to Expect: Your dad’s BMW with a Pink Floyd bumper sticker on it; lots of dry heat and indie snobs talking about how Portishead has sold out since they last saw them in ’97. Tickets: Single day tickets are SOLD OUT. 3 day passes are $269 and are still available. Website: www.coachella.com. . |
