Flying the flag for
southern based blues rock, the band from (you guessed it!) North Mississippi is back with their new record, Hernando.
The new album, released back on January 22nd, is an ode to
the band’s hometown of Hernando, Mississippi in its 11 tracks
of stripped down blues. Lead by brothers Luther
and Cody Dickinson, Hernando paints of vibe of the
south that doesn’t really see the light of day that much these
days. Most visions of the music of the south focuses on hip-hop, but
songs like “Keep The Devil Down” and “Mizzip”
make a statement for the bluesy rock that has been in the people’s
bloodstream for decades. Lead singer brother Luther lets out takes on
probably the biggest shift towards the blues on tracks “I Want
to Be A Hippy” and “Long Way From Home.” Hernando is a straight shot to the backwoods and
traditional rock-blues from the south. It may be steeped in
tradition, but it sounds just as vibrant as ever with this band.
The band has appeared at the Bonnaroo Festival over the years and will even play the occasional wedding reception in a field (if you think I’m lying, check out the pic on their Wikipedia page ). If some of the music bares some similarities to the Black Crowes, its not a far stretch. Luther Dickinson worked on the Crowes’ upcoming album Warpaint, and at press time, may still be touring with the band later on this year. But until that time comes, the AllStars are currently out on the road, as they head to Detroit on Friday, February 1st. The nearly month long tour will wrap up in Nashville on February 24th. But before Dickinson tours with the Crowes, check him out with the AllStars for a taste of true blues-based rock. The North Mississippi All Stars will be playing St. Andrew’s Hall on Friday, February 1st. Tickets are still available at www.ticketmaster.com. Check www.nmallstars.com for additional dates. . |
