ImageAs soul rocker Lenny Kravitz geared up for the release of his It Is Time For A Love Revolution album (out Feb. 5th), his quick 9-date mini tour rolled into Detroit for a nearly two hour set for a sold out crowd of about 3,000 at the Fillmore.

Early on, with Kravitz hiding his signature locks under a knit stocking cap for the entire show, he played heavily to the new album that will see the light of day very soon. Starting with the title track from the new record and followed by the hit rock radio track “Bring It On,” Lenny gave us a glimpse that the new material isn’t a big directional shift from the material of his past. The piano based “I’ll Be Waiting” seems destined to become one of Kravitz’s later hits and already had captured the attention of the mostly thirty and forty-somethings at the show. The Love Revolution album gives the impression of a more upbeat Kravitz, versus some of the darker material that shows up in a few records.

Fans were probably worrying early on that Kravitz would strictly play the whole new album in its entirety, but the fans wanting the hits weren’t left disappointed. Big hits such as “Dig In” and “Fly Away” dominated the latter half of the set. Also, his cover of the Guess Who’s “American Woman” seemed to be a fan favorite. “Stillness Of Heart,” maybe not one of Lenny’s bigger songs, but a favorite of this critic made its way into the set list.

Lenny probably could have done without the insipid “Lady,” but he did get it out of the way early and put it out of its misery. Even though his first single “Let Love Rule” ended the set before the encore, Kravitz might be stretched it out just a bit too far. Extended almost 15 minutes and complete with fans holding hands; the song just dragged and lost its potency after a while.

But at 43, Kravitz is still a hell of an entertainer and could have aged much worse than he has. But with his Love Revolution album, it proves that he hasn’t let up and continues to deliver a consistently good album as well as live set.
