The old guard of the
record industry began its death knell in 2007, as there were new ways to
hear music and new ways to check out your favorite groups. 2008 plans
to be another adventurous year in music with the old ways you find
your music becoming way more obsolete, and far more band/fan
interaction taking place. But there will be plenty of music
to listen to, no matter what way you get it and ’08
plans to bring some big names in pop, indie rock, hard rock/metal and
hip-hop this year. Here is a brief and always tentative guide to the
upcoming year (Disclaimer: Remember, if you’re favorite album
doesn’t come out on the particular date or month listed here,
it’s somebody else's fault, not mine.) Pop: It isn’t a winter without the mellow Hawaiianish folk rock sounds of Jack Johnson gracing our speakers with his February 5th release. His Sleep Through the Static album should be a big seller. Also on February 5th, Sheryl Crow releases Detours and Lenny Kravitz promises a return to his “Let Love Rule” days with his “It is Time For A Love Revolution.” We’ll see if it’s a return to 1990's success for Kravitz or not. Plan for a new Cure record sometime during the summer, no word if Robert Smith is using extra makeup these days to hide the wrinkles.Also, after a long delay between albums, Coldplay is set to release an album sometime mid-year. Coming this summer is the second album from the genre-bending Gnarls Barkley, set for a July release. And no, I don’t know what new outfits they’re gonna wear on stage for their tour. The Killers are planning on releasing a new album sometime in the fall, as well as the highly anticipated Panic! at the Disco record. There are conflicting reports of the Disco record being a Killers-style sonic shift from their debut record. Indie Rock: The always intriguing Mars Volta starts off the year with their new record on January 29th, The Bedlam in Goliath. Also, sure to be well reviewed albums are being released from the Raveonettes (February 19th) and Be Your Own Pet (March 19th). Franz Ferdinand road tested some new material last year at Bonnaroo and their new record is due sometime in the spring. The end of the year might bring us a new record from the big winners at Lollapalooza, Muse. And maybe if he doesn’t get arrested or overdose on drugs, Pete Doherty may actually put out a new record this year. Now him touring in the States could be a whole different story… Hard Rock/Metal: Welsh metal powerhouses Bullet For My Valentine release their second and major label debut, Scream, Aim, Fire, (January 29th.) This is sure to be the band’s breakout record. A supposedly more pissed off Disturbed tries and reconnect with their roots on their new record Indestructible, (March 25th.) Right after his Hellyeah tour ends in March, Chad Gray and the rest of Mudvayne are set for a release in June. Also, now that Corey Taylor is done with the year long Stone Sour tour, we may just see the masked crazies in Slipknot release an album in the fall. Now that Serj Tankian has released a solo album, System of a Down members Daron Malakian and drummer John Dolmayan are releasing their Scars on Broadway project sometime in the spring. Mastodon is preparing to enter the studio and release their next record, due sometime in the fall. And if they decide that parenthood and sobriety are boring, Metallica may finally release their next album sometime during the year. Hip-Hop: Now, is this the year that Dr. Dre finally releases his Detox record? We’ve been predicting it since I started writing this column. It's quickly becoming the Chinese Democracy of hip-hop. But before that, on fire rapper Lil Wayne brings his unorthodox style for The Carter III, due out January 18th. Expect big first week numbers for the self-proclaimed best rapper alive. Nas is planning on releasing his N---a record, due out February 26th. No word on planned protests from Al Sharpton as of yet. Eminem thought retirement sucked and is planning on releasing his new record sometime in the summer; we can only hope it’s a lot better than the subpar Encore record. Also, Pharrell Williams is resurrecting his N.E.R.D. project for a third album due out this fall. Hip-hop may experience a slow year with T.I. presumably heading for prison and Kanye West and 50 Cent releasing albums back in ’07. But someone new can always emerge; Saigon anyone? When is his record coming out? Also, if you’re in the Detroit area, here are a listing of some of the major upcoming concerts through March 2008.
