ImageI had the opportunity to attend "The Lion King" at the Detroit Opera House on Saturday night. Tickets are still available at Ticketmaster.com, and it's one of the best musical experiences I've had.

I took my 8 year old son, and it was his first musical. I'd heard mixed reviews from friends who had seen it in the past, and I have to say that the ones that said it was amazing were right. The music was phenomenal, an unbelievably talented cast and crew, and it is directed by Julie Taymor

From a venue perspective, if you haven't been to The Detroit Opera House, it's not just for opera. It opened its doors as The Capitol Theatre on January 12, 1922. After a series of mishaps, it was restored by the Michigan Opera Theatre in 1996, and it's gorgeous. Now, you can find concerts, musicals, ballet, and, yes, opera there.

From the beginning of the event through the intermission, we sat enthralled. It is extremely beautiful from both a visual and auditory perspective. I had heard some folks say that they didn't like the masks showing faces underneath, but I actually found that it was great to see the expressions of the actors.

It was also full of surprises. Not to be a spoiler, but keep an eye on the balcony, as well as the aisles.

We were most impressed with the actors playing young Simba and young Nala. They were choreographed extremely well, while still showing the excitement and innocent expression that is often only found in the very young.

My 8 year old son absolutely loved it. I teasingly asked at the intermission if he wanted to leave, if he was bored of the show, and he said, "No WAY Dad". He was even reluctant to leave for a restroom break, not wanting to miss a thing.

The stampede scene where Mufasa dies had everyone at the edge of their seats, and acrobatically was appealing as well.

My son's favorite character was Zazu, puppetmastered and played by an actor whose physical comedy was brilliant.

My overall impression of the show was that it was appropriate for young and old alike. This is something that would be a fantastic for a family outing over the holidays- we plan to take all of our kids for a repeat performance.

Grade: A+ Do yourself a favor... SEE THIS!!!
