Yeah, we know. We did a
spotlight on Chiodos way early in 2007 before their date on Taste of
Chaos, but something strange happened along the way. If you would
have said a few years back that Davison, Michigan's own Chiodos would
have an album debut at #5 on the Billboard Album Chart, they might
have laughed at you wildly and uncontrollably. But back in September,
Chiodos charged the album charts at #5, stuck up there with the “High
School Musical” album and all sorts of lousy crap hovering at
the top of the charts as a shining gem of musical integrity.
The band’s new
album Bone Palace Ballet delivers the power crunch that
previous albums do, but seems to up it a notch and moves more in a
grand scale and scope (a’la My Chemical Romance’s The
Black Parade). Lead singer Craig Owens’ vocals soar on
tracks like “Lexington” and “A Letter to Janelle.”
The new record deals with themes of obsession and blood-lust and wails
on songs like the humorously titled “If I Cut My Hair, Hawaii
Will Sink.”
Bone Palace
Ballet has received loved from Alternative Press and Blender
Magazine already this year, and is now approaching the 100,000 mark
in album sales (no small feat for the indie label Equal Vision
Records). Mix that with the nearly 200,000 now sold for their
previous album All’s Well That Ends Well and
Chiodos has quickly become the cash cow for the label. Along for the ride on
the tour is the Dayton, Ohio band The Devil Wears Prada. They may not
look as good as the “Prada” movie star Anne Hathaway, but
the guys in the band deliver a ferocious intensity that has helped the
band jump on many bills. After holding their own with the viciously
rude crowd (just ask poor death-core rapper Necro) at this year’s
Sounds Of the Underground, the band survived and is promoting their
new Plagues album. The guys in the band have eased up
on the screaming on the new record, to add a little more melody on
the tracks “Hey John, What’s Your Name Again?” and
Chiodos’ Owens joins the band on the cut “You Can’t
Spell Crap Without 'C'.” Maybe a slam at hip-hop, maybe
not?
Either way, The Devil
Wears Prada guitars some solid shredding courtesy of Chris Rubey and
Jeremy DePoyster that shows skills well beyond their years while lead
singer Mike Hranica seems to find his happy place as a vocalist on
this record. Expect to some hear songs from their Dear Love: A
Beautiful Dischord as well. Don’t worry guys, we won't
hold the Ohio thing against you or anything…
The tour comes to a
triumphant end as it rolls into Clutch Cargo's and becomes the closest
thing to a hometown show that Chiodos will have (unless you play the
Machine Shop for maybe 6 nights in a row). And kiddies, bad news, the
show is already sold out. So, bug a friend from Davison or maybe you
have a friend from Dayton that can help you out for the show. I’d
suggest working on some connections to see one of the biggest shows
hitting Clutch this year.
Chiodos and The
Devil Wears Prada will be playing Clutch Cargo’s on Friday,
November 30th. Tickets are SOLD OUT, but check with
www.ticketmaster.com
to see if any tickets do become available. Both bands will tour
throughout 2008.
