ImageAfter a long absence, complete with gargantuan lead singer Peter Steele ending up in prison after a long battle with substance abuse, Type O Negative has resurfaced stronger and cleaner than ever. Along with death rumors and whatever other whispers that have gone on about the band during their hiatus, Steele and the rest of the Brooklyn band has come back with their Dead Again record, which shows off new themes as well as focusing the goth elements of the band that gained them notoriety in the 90s. The cornerstone of the new album is the 11 minute anti-war anthem “The Profits Of Doom,” which sounds like a kiss off of the state of the world. Tracks like “Tripping On A Blind Man” deals with Steele’s family intervention at the tail end of his abuse. The record is more personal than past records and is a rejuvenating turn for the band.
Dead Again is the first record from Type O since 2003’s Life Is Killing Me, which had the hard rock radio favorite “I Don’t Wanna Be Me.” The band is best known for their 1993 platinum record Bloody Kisses Most hard rock fans remember the eerie sounds of “Black No. #1” and “Christian Woman,” which hit the charts hard in 1994. The band has already had a refreshing sense of irony, whether it be in the track “My Girlfriend’s Girlfriend” or their doom and gloom cover of Seals and Crofts 70s hit “Summer Breeze.”
Type O Negative is in the midst of a U.S. tour that will bring them to Harpo’s in Detroit on Saturday, October 27th. Opening up will be the OzzFest show stealers in Lordi, bringing their Finnish thunder (pyro may or may not be there- depends on Harpo’s restrictions). Type O Negative is the perfect soundtrack for anything Halloween related; costumes are optional, but wearing black and staying in the right gloomy mood is always welcomed.
Type O Negative with special guest Lordi will be at Harpo’s on Saturday, October 27th. Tickets are $25 and are available at www.ticketmaster.com. Additional dates are available at www.typeonegative.net.
