FridayTiger Army @ St. Andrew’s Hall - After a scene stealing set at this year’s Warped Tour, the L.A. band is back on their fall tour. The band’s new record, Music From Regions Beyond is a slightly stylistic departure for the trio, with the band’s signature “psychobilly” sound morphing into more goth and pop than in the past. The band’s single “Forever Fades Army” is the first single to get radio play outside of Southern California. For singer Nick 13 (yes, it sounds like an internet screen name), getting vocal work on AFI’s smash “Decemberunderground” album and touring endlessely with Social Disortion has helped the band gain cult and show stealing status. Tickets are $13 and are available through www.ticketmaster.com. Brand New/ Thrice @ Fillmore Detroit - This is the second show for the intriguing alt-rock double bill with the heady Thrice and Brand New. The always cerebral So-Cal group Thrice is getting highly ambitious with their new record The Alchemy Index, Vol. 1 & 2, just released on Tuesday. The album is the follow up to their Top 10 release Vheissu, which gave fans the big single “Image of the Invisible.” Also, Brand New is breaking from the emo tag that hindered them early on and is now drawing comparisons to Radiohead with their The Devil and God Are Raging Inside of Me album, which features the killer track “Sowing Season.” Tickets are $20 and are available at through www.ticketmaster.com Morrissey @ Royal Oak Theatre - The
ex-Smiths man continues on his tour, which swings into an intimate stop in
Royal Oak.
Now
that Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr is active again with Modest Mouse, don’t
expect the calls for a Smiths reunion quiet down anytime soon. But in the
meantime, if you need that fix the tunes from the 80s and beyond, this is your
best bet.
Tickets range from $51 to $77 and are available at www.tickets.com. Road Trip Alert: Fall Out Boy @ Delta Plex (Grand Rapids) - A month before the tour hits Detroit, the hit makers in Fall Out Boy give Grand Rapids an early test drive of their new tour. Still riding high from their huge Infinity On High record, and pumping out single after single, Stump & Wentz & Co. bring their friends on tour once again. Finally, MTV’s Best New Artist Gym Class Heroes supports FOB, with tunes from their album As Cruel As School Children which has had a slow burn success on the charts. But with tunes like the insanely catchy “Clothes Off” and “New Friend Request,” its pretty hard to think this stuff isn’t catchy. Also on the bill are Plain White T’s and the oddly titled Cute Is What We Aim For. Tickets are $28 and are available at www.ticketmaster.com Also on Friday: Down @ Harpo’s - (See the Artist Spotlight on Down here.) Saturday
Van Halen @ Joe Louis Arena - Yes, David Lee Roth is a big dork and looks kinda creepy at times. Yes, Eddie Van Halen is an egomaniac on and off stage. And yes, his 16-year-old son really has no right to be on stage instead of Michael Anthony. But after I attended the show in Cleveland last week, all that was thrown aside as the band delivered a mega-hit two hour set. The song focuses on what some people refer to as the band’s glory days (1977-1984) and the amount of ballads during the set hovers between zero and zilch. The stage show is somewhat minimal, but with David Lee Roth, the oddly charmaistic frontman tries to take the place of pyro and lightshows with his larger than life stage presence. But expect to hear “Panama,” “Ain’t Talkin’ About Love,” "Jump" and countless others. Tickets range from $49.50 to $149.50 and are available at www.ticketmaster.com. Van Halen also plays Monday, October 22nd at the Palace of Auburn Hills. Ticket prices are the same for both shows. Every Time I Die w/ Underoath @ Fillmore Detroit - This is definitely a show where the openers outweigh the headliner. Buffalo’s affable and joking Every Time I Die bring their good times and hard rock to the Fillmore. The band is currently out promoting their solid new record The Big Dirty. Also on the bill is southern hard rockers Maylene & The Sons of Disaster. Why the emo-metal of Underoath is headlining this show is beyond me, but definitely go for the openers. Tickets are $20 and are available at www.ticketmaster.com. Misfits @ Harpo’s - The long time punk rockers embark on a semi-reunion tour as they hit Harpo’s. Hear all the punk rock classics that Metallica and others ripped off on at some point at one time or another during their careers. Still waiting on Glenn Danzig reuniting with them, but I am not holding my breath. Tickets are $20 and are available at www.ticketmaster.com. Monday Framing Hanley (opening for Trapt & Fuel) @ Emerald Theatre - Coming straight out of the usual country stronghold of Nashville, Framing Hanley along with other rock bands are proving that Nashville isn’t a one note town. The band delivers a hard rocking sound custom made for rock radio. Their track “Hear Me Now” is starting to gain stream on the airwaves and even getting some Top 40 spins for the song as well. Their album “This Moment” is currently out and the band is opening on the tour with the road warriors in Trapt and Fuel, which is boasting a new lead singer after original singer Brett Scallions went to work with the surviving members of the Doors. Tickets are $20 and are available at www.ticketmaster.com |
