FRIDAYMachine Head w/Arch Enemy @ Harpo’s - After witnessing the Machine Head set a few days back in Cleveland, metalheads may be checking out the best metal set of the year. The Bay Area metal band released possibly the best metal album of the year with The Blackening. Their 70-minute set only yielded ten songs, but with nearly ten minute new tracks like “Clenching The Fists Of Dissent” and “Halo,” Machine Head has resurrected their creative and live genius. Expect no filler as the band plays tracks like “Davidian” and “Old” to please the old school fans. If the Detroit crowd is anything like the raucous group at the House of Blues in Cleveland, expect some blood to fly in the pits. Sweden’s Arch Enemy and former MCB interviewees Throwdown fill out the bill. Tickets are $20 and are available at www.ticketmaster.com. Fishbone w/ Slighty Stoopid @ Clutch Cargo’s - Back in the late 80s, the reggae meet hard rock sound of Fishbone seemed to put them on the fast track with the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Even though the group has put out consistently solid music, they never reached those heights. Slighty Stoopid comes from the school of Sublime, and seems like a band that’s one hit away from something really big. Tickets are $17.50 and are available at www.ticketmaster.com. Hot Hot Heat @ Saint Andrews Hall - The Canadian alt rock band scored some radio hits a few years back with “Middle of Nowhere” and “Goodnight, Goodnight.” Even with the respectable showing last time, their new Happiness Ltd. Album has got off to a slow start out of the gate. Playing with them is another band probably one song away from big time success, Bedouin Soundclash. Tickets are $17 and are available at www.ticketmaster.com. SATURDAY Static X w/ Shadows Fall @ Harpo’s - Fresh off the OzzFest and Sounds of the Underground tour respectively, Static X and Shadows Fall brings a big second night of a heavy metal hitter weekend at Harpo’s. Static X’s “evil disco” meets purveyors of the new thrash metal scene in Shadows Fall. Also on the bill are OzzFest show stealers 3 Inches of Blood and Divine Heresy. Tickets are $20 and are available at www.ticketmaster.com. Blue October w/ Yellowcard @ Royal Oak Music Theatre - The mellow modern rock sounds of Blue October may headline this show, but Yellowcard’s punk-pop tracks are by far the real reason to check out this show. The Florida band is out supporting their new album, Paper Walls. Also on the bill is Shiny Toy Guns, whose “Le Disko” has been in dozens of commercials since its release earlier in the year. Tickets are $35 and are available at www.tickets.com. ROAD TRIP ALERT: Kid Rock @ Taft Theatre (Cincinnati) - In case you are looking to drive about four hours to the bottom of Ohio, Detroit’s own Kid Rock will be starting his promo tour in Cincinnati. The new album Rock & Roll Jesus (out October 9th) is heavy on the rock, and his first single, “So Hott” is ready-made for rock radio, complete with AC/DC style riffs. Tickets are sold out, but always check to see if more tickets open up a day or two before the show at www.ticketmaster.com. SUNDAY Smashing Pumpkins @ Fox Theatre - One of the most anticipated rock reunion shows of the year hits the Fox as Billy Corgan’s retooled Pumpkins carries on with their reunion tour. Their new record, Zeitgeist recalls the band’s greatest moments at times and seems to go on for too long at other points. Original guitarist James Iha is still in the music industry, and original bassist D’Arcy Wreskty is raising sheep somewhere in west Michigan (I am dead serious about this fact) and will be sitting out this tour. But if Corgan is involved with the Pumpkins, that is all most people will need. The Bravery opens the show. Tickets are sold out, but always check to see if more tickets open up a day or two before the show at www.ticketmaster.com. |
