Taking their name from the late 19th century
painting, Absinthe Ava are the latest Detroit rock additions to stick
their stake in the ground for the conquest of the local music scene. The band
was founded in 2004 by singer and guitarist Al Nikolic and blends influences
such as the Beatles, early Queen and early Zeppelin to form the thick and
textured sound.Since playing various gigs in and around the Motor City for the past few years, the trio has released their first EP, aptly entitled Glow From The Shadows (get it? Absinthe/green glow, thought so…). The album is an ode to their influences, with the leadoff track “Light Me Up High” displaying a Brian May-esque solo. The band displayed their vocal harmonies on songs like “Cuba” and “Balloon Man.” The latter song is being given the band’s first music video treatment and should be out later in the year. A definite 60s harmony runs through the final track “Dig,” and would sound at home during the radio back then as it would now. Absinthe Ava says that they have tried to neatly package their sound into one musical genre, but has failed miserably anytime they have tried to do that. But most of the time, hard to peg isn’t a bad thing. The band is self-releasing their debut record, and Glow From The Shadows can be purchased through their MySpace page. The band is preparing to lock down some dates later this year as well as trying to break in a new drummer at the same time. Until then, check out the afterglow of Absinthe Ava’s debut. . |
