FRIDAY Cartel @ Clutch Cargo’s - The Atlanta punk-pop group tries to avoid that “emo” word at all costs as they have spent plenty of time on MTV’s “TRL” with their hit “Honestly.” The band recorded their new self titled record in a see through bubble, which became the subject of a MTV reality show. Odds are, they won't be performing in a bubble during their show in Detroit. Tickets are $17 and are available at www.ticketmaster.com. Aiden @ St. Andrew’s Hall - Whether their look creeps you out, or makes you laugh, Aiden did make a good impression at the Taste of Chaos tour. The Seattle band’s new record, Conviction is a more melodic departure that has hardcore Aiden fans torn. But a departure didn’t hurt bands like My Chemical Romance, so we will see where this one goes. w/ Still Remains and 1997. Tickets are $15 and are available at www.ticketmaster.com. SATURDAY Ryan Adams @ Michigan Theatre - The throwback troubadour scales back on the festival visits for a tour that brings him mostly through college towns. Hopefully, Ann Arbor will be in a festive mood after the Michigan game to enjoy Adams’ folksy jams. Tickets range from $25 to $32.50 and are available at www.livenation.com. Steve Vai @ Royal Oak Music Theatre - The former David Lee Roth guitarist has a cult of mostly male guitar fan boys that will eat up and air guitar through every moment of Vai’s performance. If you are looking for words in your songs, this is probably not the right show to head to. But if you want to compare amps and heads, this is your night. Tickets are $27.50 and are available at www.tickets.com. SUNDAY The Confession (opening for Megadeth) @ Orbit Room (Grand Rapids) - Why Megadeth is playing Grand Rapids and not Detroit is beyond me. But before hearing Dave Mustaine and his usual rants about the government and life, check out the Orange County band The Confession. If the Confession's sound owes a little bit to Avenged Sevenfold, don’t be surprised. A7X’s lead singer M. Shadows (or Matt Sanders if you need his real name) produced the band’s record, Requiem. Just barely out of high school, the band has honed their hard rock sound and giving the album their all. Lead singer Taylor Holland can prove he can wail in the vocal department on such tracks as “Dance With the Devil.” The band’s guitar work owes a bit to classic 1980s heavy metal on songs like “Jealously” and “Dead Man Walking.” If you didn’t catch them on their Warped Tour visit and you're anywhere near the west side of the state, go catch what is sure to be a show stealer.
