ImageRichmond, Virginia is known as the home of current metal kings Lamb of God, but there are some other heavy bands coming out of that area as well. Around just as long as the previously mentioned band, the guys in Alabama Thunderpussy have been touring the country quite extensively and are back on the road now. Founded in 1996, the band has toured alongside a wide spectrum of bands, such as Mastodon as well as fellow Richmond natives Gwar. The band hit up a tour with Corrosion of Conformity a few years back as well.
They are on tour behind their latest record, Open Fire, which showcases the band’s dirty and sleazy punk infused metal. Lead singer Kyle Thomas’ vocals range in between vocals on Mastodon records and on tracks like “Words of the Dying Man,” Thomas echoes the vocals of Clutch’s Neil Fallon. The band could definitely fit in the “stoner rock” category, with their bluesy moments that are peppered throughout Open Fire. Guitarists Erik Larson and Ryan Lake provide a dual guitar attack that still keeps things heavy, but actually quite accessible most of the time.
The band is currently on tour with Obituary and is just starting a month long tour of the States. The tour will hit the Emerald Theatre in Mt. Clemens, MI this Wednesday (September 19th), and carry on through October 6th. Along for the ride is hardcore band Full Blown Chaos. We’ll see if the band can keep up with their 1999 tour with High on Fire, where the band went through 50 bottles of whiskey in 29 days. Whether they do it or not, Open Fire is a prime drinking record.
Alabama Thunderpussy will open for Obituary on Wednesday, September 19th at the Emerald Theatre. Tickets are $20 and are available at www.ticketmaster.com. Additional dates are available at www.atpva.com. .
