Image In the British music scene, many people have been effected in one way or another by legendary drug addict and part-time musician Pete Doherty, Dan Sartain knows of this first hand. Sartain was invited to perform at the 2006 NME Awards in England, as a backup in case Doherty (likely) didn’t show. But Doherty did show, and Sartain was left out in the cold.
Now back in the States, the Alabama native Sartain brings his rock-a-billy meets garage style for a summer tour with the Detroit Cobras.

His latest album Join Dan Sartain, is a 15-track bouncy and fun affair that recollects the old days of rock and roll. Songs like “Gun and Knife” fit the rock-a-billy style well while adding a little meat to that early day rock-and-roll sound. Sartain doesn’t try to drag out songs (always a welcome change). Most of the songs such as “Young Girls” and “Hangers On” are between two and three minutes. Songs like “Besa Me Mucho” recalls such troubadours like Jonathan Richman (in case that name doesn’t sound familiar, he’s the guitarist guy through the movie There’s Something About Mary.) But the short songs don’t mean they’re incomplete either; Sartain’s grooves make the album compelling and entertaining.

He is joined by Rajan Permoley, who creates many of the furiously paced drumming on the record. The two creates a two-piece band that takes their influence from a wide range of artists, such as Sonic Youth, Bo Diddley and the Wu-Tang Clan.

Sartain recently opened up shows for the White Stripes in Canada, and is currently on tour through September 1st, finishing up with his date at the Magic Stick with the Cobras. So, come and check out Sartain in the home stretch of his summer tour. We promise Pete Doherty won,t be there.

Dan Sartain and the Detroit Cobras will be finishing their tour at the Magic Stick on Saturday, September 1st. Tickets are available at the door. Check out www.myspace.com/dansartain for upcoming dates.
