ImageCarrying the southern rock flag for this year’s Ozzfest is the Tennessee band The Showdown. The band is playing the second stage at OzzFest this year, and I had a chance to chat with lead singer David Bunton about the evils of emo, temptation on the road and a little hair metal. Here is the interview with the Showdown:

MCB: What was your initial thought on the free Ozzfest?

DB: For a band like us and for the fans, I thought the idea ruled. People are dying to see Ozzy for free. I know there are enough rednecks that want to see it, so I liked the idea. For us, OzzFest has been perfect so far and it’s a great opportunity.

MCB: Being a harder southern rock band, do you have favorites from that group of bands?

DB: I mean I’m a huge fan of .38 Special and Lynyrd Skynyrd. I love a band like Lamb of God, who are from Virginia, so technically, they’re southern rock too. I really am into Maylene and the Sons of Disaster; I don’t think you get much more southern rock than them right now.

MCB: The band seems to have a thing against emo. What is your biggest issue with it?

DB:(Laughs) I guess it's just an easy target. It comes out so feminine and whiny. You really cant deny that a Fall Out Boy song here and there is catchy, but as a whole, I just don’t understand the attitude in the music. These bands talk about having a hard life, and I think it’s just bullshit. They should enjoy what they have and what music is missing right now is the idea of having a good time.

MCB:As a rock band from Tennessee, did you guys take a lot of heat for not playing country music?

DB: Not at all. We’re from around Johnson City, which is a rock and roll town. I mean, bands like Slaughter and Warrant and all those type of bands played that town all the time. So, we never felt out of place there.

MCB: As a young band on OzzFest, what is the biggest temptation on the road?

DB: Personally, I think it’s the fact that you can get anywhere you want for free. You name it, drugs, booze, its there. But I think that harder drugs is just bad to get involved with. For a band like us, we’re not rock stars and we’re just trying to keeping a level head while you’re on stage. We want to give the right effort and do our friends and family proud.

MCB: You guys have some cowbell in the songs, what’s the appeal?

DB: It reminds me of 70s and 80s party rock, dude. Its just a lot of fun to have in songs and it always reminds me of that “Saturday Night Live” skit, it just rules.

The Showdown plays on Ozzfest at DTE Energy Music Theatre on Sunday, August 26th. The band will also play a pre-OzzFest party at the Ritz in Warren on Saturday, August 25th. OzzFest is sold out, but tickets are available for the show at the Ritz. Their album “Temptation Come My Way” is out now.
