According to most major
Detroit publications, there is only one event going on this weekend in the
entire Metro area. As nearly a million people jam
Woodward Avenue, for a glimpse of the cars their parents and grandparents drove
back before dinosaurs, other people
are looking for a way to avoid the cluster-bleep of chaos on Woodward. For some,
anything,
even
a marathon of The Two Coreys on A&E is better than watching a 26-mile
long traffic jam. Here are some things going on around town to get away from the
insanity.
FRIDAY:
Portugal the Man @ Hayloft Liquor Stand - The Alaskan prog-rock group was recently in town at the Magic Stick. Their return brings them to the Clem in the always sweaty and intimate venue. Think of the Mars Volta, but without the 21-minute tracks. Tickets are $10, and are available at the door or at www.ticketmaster.com.
SATURDAY:
The Rentals @ Majestic Theatre - Did one of these guys used to be in Weezer? Oh yeah, original bassist Matt Sharp made this once side project a full time gig and gets the band’s polished indie-rock back in the eyes and ears of the masses. Tickets are $15 and are available at www.ticketmaster.com. Mae @ The Shelter - The emo-rockers from Virginia Beach have spent plenty of time touring with Yellowcard over the years. But the band is launching a headlining tour of small clubs. The band’s latest album was released on Tuesday and they'll be playing most of the new record. |
