According to most major Detroit publications, there is only one event going on this weekend in the entire Metro area. As nearly a million people jam Woodward Avenue, for a glimpse of the cars their parents and grandparents drove back before dinosaurs, other people are looking for a way to avoid the cluster-bleep of chaos on Woodward. For some, anything, even a marathon of The Two Coreys on A&E is better than watching a 26-mile long traffic jam. Here are some things going on around town to get away from the insanity.

FRIDAY:

ImageBeyonce @ The Palace - The ex-Destiny Child and Janet Jackson wannabe gets a big arena tour with her name written all over it. Isn't there an anti-Beyonce rule on radio yet, like Phil Collins had back in the 1980s? There should. Watch the step, B!. Alan Thicke’s son Robin Thicke, who is on a hot streak of his own, opens up with his tracks from his not-at-all-egotistical album The Evolution of Robin Thicke. Tickets are still available and ranging from $49.75 to $99.75 and are available at www.palacenet.com.

Portugal the Man @ Hayloft Liquor Stand - The Alaskan prog-rock group was recently in town at the Magic Stick. Their return brings them to the Clem in the always sweaty and intimate venue. Think of the Mars Volta, but without the 21-minute tracks. Tickets are $10, and are available at the door or at www.ticketmaster.com.

ImageEkoostik Hookah @ Magic Stick - The Columbus jam band is the quintessential hippie jam band that never made it to the big leagues. But the group has a loyal fan base around the Midwest and should keep the Stick packed. Tickets are $17 and are available at the door or at www.ticketmaster.com.

SATURDAY:

ImageKenny Chesney @ Ford Field - Ford Field’s only summer concert is gonna be a packed one, as 60,000+ will converge at the stadium. Yours truly will be missing this night of country, but get ready to see a lot of belt buckles and cowboy hats in downtown Detroit. Could be quite amusing. With Brooks and Dunn and Sugarland. Tickets range from $49 to $89 and are available at www.ticketmaster.com. Note: Only limited view seating left.

The Rentals @ Majestic Theatre - Did one of these guys used to be in Weezer? Oh yeah, original bassist Matt Sharp made this once side project a full time gig and gets the band’s polished indie-rock back in the eyes and ears of the masses. Tickets are $15 and are available at www.ticketmaster.com.

Mae @ The Shelter - The emo-rockers from Virginia Beach have spent plenty of time touring with Yellowcard over the years. But the band is launching a headlining tour of small clubs. The band’s latest album was released on Tuesday and they'll be playing most of the new record.
