Image The 90s modern rock scene was represented in a double bill featuring Live and Collective Soul, as the two bands brought the hits for a crowd of 7,000 in a muggy evening in Clarkston, MI.
Still touring behind the 2006 release Songs From Black Mountain, Live played an 85-minute set, leaving the hits for the tail end and showing that the band still can pack them in for a loyal fan base after all of these years.
Lead by a very svelte Ed Kowlaczyk and Chad Taylor (looking like a bearded version of Steven Van Zandt ), the group played a flurry of new songs early on, such as “The River” and “Where Do We Go From Here?” Many in the crowd seemed more familiar with the new material than during the band’s visit the previous year, when the fans seemed somewhat indifferent to the new material.
But for those wanting a trip to the band’s days of owning rock radio, they were in luck on this night. The massive hit “Selling the Drama” got some play early, as well as the anthem “The Dolphin’s Cry.” Over time, bands get the tendency to play their hits sloppily, but Live kept the hits very tight and consistent. The crowd seemed to go the wildest for the band’s other hits, “I Alone” and the swaggering “Lakini’s Juice,” the most during the set.
And of course, songs like “Lightning Crashes” and “Heaven” were given the late-show treatment as well and sent the fans heading home pleased. It’s good to see that Live has maintained their passion and brought forth a music that is still well received after these years, and not relived like some of the music of that decade.

Fellow 90s hit-makers, Collective Soul, helped open up the show with an hour long set that was peppered with new songs from their upcoming album (out in August) and seemed to avoid some of the band’s hits. But fear not, their major hits such as “The World I Know” and the closer “Shine” got all the attention that they needed.
