Sure, there have been plenty of big UFC pay-per views in the past. UFC 100 was a big milestone for the company back in July of 2009, but the upcoming UFC 129 event in Toronto has the potential to be one of the biggest events in UFC history. Not only is it the first time the company brings an event to Ontario (after years of ridiculous laws against the sport), but the event will be the biggest UFC draw to date, with nearly 55,000 people packing the Rogers Centre (formerly known as the Skydome).

For the huge number of people planning on descending on Toronto for UFC 129, they will see some big time fights with some big time implications. UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre will defend his title against possibly his toughest opponent yet, former Strikeforce champ Jake Shields. Also, former WEC phenom Jose Aldo will make his UFC debut against Mark Hominick. And as a third major match, MMA legend Randy Couture will fight his final match of his career against light heavyweight contender Lyoto Machida.

So, with all of these matches- let’s not waste any time and I’ll make my predictions for the major fights at UFC 129.

UFC Welterweight Championship: Georges St. Pierre (21-2) vs. Jake Shields (26-4): Everybody knows that with the exception of Shields, St. Pierre has cleaned out the entire welterweight division and has beaten everybody. What you may not know is that even with St. Pierre’s unbelievable winning streak, Shields’ winning streak of 15 fights in a row is much larger. But granted, even though Shields’ competition was solid, it sometimes lacked the gauntlet St. Pierre has been thrown over the years. Shields was brought to the UFC has a last hope for someone to beat St. Pierre, and for that reason alone (in my opinion). If you’re expecting a quick knockout or submission in this fight- forget it. This will be a ju-jitsu mat contest for five rounds, with two of the best in the sport making this fight an endurance contest. This won’t be the prettiest or most brutal fight in the world- think of it more like a chess match between these guys. But with the home country crowd and UFC level experience St. Pierre has, it’s tough to pick against him.
PICK: Georges St. Pierre wins via unanimous decision.

UFC Featherweight Championship: Jose Aldo (18-1) vs. Mark Hominick (20-8): In the WEC, Aldo beat everybody: Urijah Faber, Mike Brown, you name it- Jose Aldo has built a case for being the best pound for pound fighter in MMA, and not he gets to prove it on the biggest stage of all. Hominick has been on a five fight win streak, but he runs into a roadblock. I don’t see Hominick ending Aldo’s reign anytime soon, and Aldo will most likely win with a pummeling of the Canadian Hominick.
PICK: Jose Aldo wins via knockout in the 2nd round.

Light Heavyweight Match: Randy Couture (19-10) vs. Lyoto Machida (16-2): Ok, Randy’s 48 years old, he hasn’t fought anybody big time in a while, we get it- he’s over the hill. Ok, with that said, it is a testament to Randy Couture that he can even compete at this event at the age of 48 (I can only wish I’ll be in his shape at 48). It will be entertaining to see him get in the ring one last time, before he goes onto his action movie career. However, this isn’t the cakewalk for him that many fans probably wanted: Machida has lost two fights in a row- but to his credit, he was screwed over in November in a decision against Rampage Jackson. Machida still has that knockout potential and should still be considered a contender for the Light Heavyweight crown. Machida will handle Randy early on; whether or not Machida takes it easy on him due to it being his last match is another thing. I see it going to a decision, but it won’t even be close.
PICK: Lyoto Machida wins via unanimous decision.

Make sure to check out www.ufc.com for a full fight card. Also, UFC 129 will be the first pay per view to start at 9pm est, check local listings on where to watch it.

Well, I’ve been known for my music critiques and rantings over the years, but one other thing that I’ve been following for a while is UFC. Now, I don’t own any Tapout or Affliction t-shirts (which is definitely a good thing), nor do have the desire to train and get in the ring with one of these guys, but by watching enough, you get an idea for these fighters and their trajectory within the UFC ranks.
One of the biggest UFC Pay-Per Views is coming up as UFC hits New Jersey on Saturday, March 27th. There are two major championship fights on the card. One for the Welterweight title and one for the Interim Heavyweight title. Below is my questionable expert knowledge in the world of MMA and my predictions and thoughts for UFC 111.
NOTE: If you lose any money on these fights because of my prediction, then that is your own fault and I claim no responsibility for your stupidity or mine.
Here we go..

Welterweight Title: Georges St. Pierre (19-2) vs. Dan Hardy (23-6)
Georges St. Pierre has not fought since last July’s UFC 100, when he tore a muscle in a very painful place and needed surgery, which has kept the Canadian out of action since then. In the wake of that, Englishman Dan Hardy has called out GSP on many occasions, thinking he’s the man to bring down the longtime champ St. Pierre. The buzz got louder after Hardy beat Mike Swick at UFC 105. But when it comes down to it, St. Pierre is way too far of a force to lose at this point. The only thing that could derail St. Pierre is overconfidence or lack of preparation. But St. Pierre will be focused and even though Hardy will put up a good fight, St. Pierre will eventually wear him out in a submission.
PICK: St. Pierre wins via submission in the 4th Round.

Interim Heavyweight Title: Frank Mir (13-4) vs. Shane Carwin (11-0)
Ok, I would refer to this more as a “#1 Contender Match” than a title match. With Brock Lesnar recovering and now training for his next title defense, this match is nothing more than sizing up to see who Lesnar fights next. Carwin is the quiet knockout artist who has slowly been building steam over the past couple of years. Carwin was supposed to fight Lesnar for the title back in November, before Lesnar’s freakish aliment up in Canada stopped that fight. Meanwhile, saying Frank Mir is hellbent on fighting Lesnar again is an understatement: Mir wants to destroy everything Lesnar is about and win the title back. This should be a good fight that probably wont see the full five rounds. If Carwin keeps it from becoming a ground battle, he could pull out the victory. But I believe Mir will take this to the ground and will get Carwin in a submission and get his wish: The rubber match and massive PPV numbers for a rematch with Lesnar.
PICK: Mir wins via submission in late 3rd Round.

Check www.ufc.com for the full fight card and ways to watch it.
