The tales of high school aged kids daydreaming in class about playing music for a living doesn’t generally pan out the way they planned, but for Avi Buffalo- his visions have definitely been the exception to the norm.

Born Avigdor Zahner-Isenberg, Avi was dreaming of skateboarding glory in Long Beach when he got the music bug. Avi began to work on material using any music computer software he could find and started to create his music. The fruits of his labor paid off as Avi was signed to Sub Pop Records and his self-titled debut album back on April 26th.

The 12 songs on the debut record deliver a quirky indie rock charm that shows off Avi’s dream-like voice on songs like “Can’t I Know” and “Coaxed.” The album is lead by the upbeat and 60s Californian vibe of “What’s It In For?”

Avi Buffalo has a busy rest of the summer planned, as they gear up for a big tour with Modest Mouse that will last through the end of July. The band’s first exposure to the Detroit area will take place this Thursday and Friday as they open for Modest Mouse at the Royal Oak Theater in what will be two of the biggest shows of the band’s young career.

It is quite possible the young guys in Avi Buffalo could go on to bigger and better things, so this chance with Modest Mouse could be your first time to see what might be a big thing down the road.

Avi Buffalo open for Modest Mouse on Thursday, July 1st and Friday, July 2nd. Friday’s show is sold out, but tickets (for $35) for Thursday’s show are available at www.tickets.com. Additional band info and tour dates can be found at wwww.myspace.com/avibuffalo.
